Derek Wales Fitness and Nutrition

Derek Wales Fitness and Nutrition 1-2-1, Group and Online Personal Training that gets Results! I love helping anyone who wants to make changes to their current situation.

I have a huge passion for helping people to not only reach and exceed their goals, but to see them become both comfortable and knowledgeable within the gym and with their nutrition. I believe that consistency, hard work, structured training and sensible lifestyle choices are what is required in order to achieve long term success with your health and fitness. My approach is a blend between motivation and education. I want to (and I will) push you to work to the level you are capable of. However, I feel equally important is teaching you not only how to eat and train for your situation, but also why you are doing things in a specific way. It is this knowledge that will help and allow you to lead a healthy, balanced lifestyle long after you finish doing PT.

Something I’m keen to hang onto for as long as possible is an element of athleticism.

Strength work and some conditioning will always be the base, but I love the feeling of being in control of my own body. Being able to challenge it and ‘feel’ athletic, whatever that looks like.

What do I mean by athleticism though? For me, it’d include, among some other things:

Speed - being able to move and react quickly.
Rotations and agility - being able to change direction and twist and turn (without pain).
Balance - not only being able to stand on one leg, but being able to actually move on one leg, land on one leg, etc
Co-ordination - being able to make my arms and legs go where I actually want them to go.

All of the above are obviously great for sports - but also become really important for later in life.

I try to include some form of athleticism in most of my clients training. Sometimes it’s a separate ‘athleticism’ section of a session, other times it’s hidden in the warm up, finishers or within the strength portion of the session.

For me it’s something we should all be including in gym sessions - whether you’re 20 and training for sports or 50 and looking to preserve and improve your physicality for the next 30 or 40 years 👍

Lifestyle change isn’t about changing one big thing in your life.

It’s about changing lots and lots of small things that eventually accumulate to what people might describe as a healthy lifestyle.

Everyone is different and there’s no one size fits all. As an example however, for me, I have to start my day off on the right footing. If I get this wrong, my day doesn’t feel right and some not so great choices can creep in.

I have the same breakfast almost every morning. It’s almost like the start of a rhythm throughout the rest of the day.

If you are looking to improve your lifestyle, don’t feel overwhelmed. Change one small thing this week and build from there.

This week marks 2 full years since I started doing some PT work with Lourdes Secondary School. What started as a 6 week block of 2 hour sessions has evolved into a couple of years working 1 full day each week with a range of amazing pupils.

I’m lucky enough to have a job with huge satisfaction anyway, but helping these young people to gain knowledge in fitness and nutrition and give them something different to focus their energies on every week is brilliant.

Having now been accepted onto Glasgow City Council’s Embedded Mental health framework for the next 4 years, I’m looking forward to helping more schools and kids across Glasgow to get active, fit and strong in the coming weeks, months and beyond 💪

The youngsters in learning bench press and split squats this morning 💪

I’ve been working with this cracking group of boys every week for a full year now. That’s been a full year of learning how to move well, how to control and understand their own body, working on fundamental movements like jumping, crawling, hopping, skipping, sprinting. It’s only now that we are moving on to lifting an empty bar and learning lifting techniques.

Imagine how safe and effective gyms would be if everyone learned how to lift properly when they were 13/14 🤔 These boys will be flying by the time they hit 16, 17, 18 and want to lift heavy weights. I can’t wait to see their progress in the coming weeks, months and beyond👌🏋🏻
