When you're going through tough times it can be hard to see anything good around you. The suggestion that you should be 'grateful' might initially feel dismissive and invalidating. However, showing gratitude and recognising the positive things in your life can cause a shift in your outlook and pull you upwards on the spiral out of low mood and anxiety. Any move in that direction is important as it makes the next step easier. Whether it is the first glimpse of spring flowers, the cat that stopped to miaow 'hello' in the street or the coffee out your favourite mug, notice it and allow yourself to feel gratitude today.

After a busy day at work do you tend to focus on that one thing that could have gone better and forget the hundreds of things that went well? Do you tend to dwell on it, worrying about it and thinking about what you should have done differently? Imagine instead offering yourself the compassion you would to a colleague. Imagine being able to reframe your thoughts and acknowledge the many things you did well that day. Imagine having healthy mental boundaries to let you enjoy your family and leisure time and forget about work. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you don't have time to do the things you enjoy. When we do stop and take some time for ourselves it might come with feelings of guilt. Learn to schedule in protected time just for you and let go of that feeling you should always be busy and productive. Doing things we enjoy helps to boost mood, self esteem and also reduces stress and anxiety levels. You deserve a break!
