What Is “Nerve Compression”?
Nerve compression occurs when surrounding tissues—such as muscles, fascia, ligaments, or spinal discs—press on a nerve, causing it to function abnormally. This can lead to symptoms such as:
• Shooting pain
• Numbness or tingling
• Muscle weakness
• Radiating pain down the arm or leg
One of the most common causes is L4–L5 disc bulge or herniation, which can compress the nerve root and create sciatica-like symptoms.
Common Causes of Nerve Compression
✔ Repetitive movements
Frequent bending, twisting, lifting → Tight muscles and fascia that can press on nerves.
✔ Injury or accidents
Falls, sudden impacts, or lifting incorrectly → Acute nerve compression.
✔ Poor posture over many years
Rounded shoulders, forward head posture, excessive lumbar arch → Narrowing of nerve pathways.
✔ Disc bulge or herniation
Especially at L4–L5, causing low-back pain radiating down the leg.
✔ Bone spurs from degeneration (Osteophytes / Arthritis)
Reduced space for nerves → Pain, numbness, weakness.
✔ Excess body weight
Increases stress on the spine continuously.
Why You Should Know This
Because 50–70% of pain that people assume is “muscle pain” is actually caused by nerve compression.
The longer it’s left untreated → the more inflamed the nerve becomes → muscle weakness → chronic pain.
When You Should Get Evaluated
• Radiating pain from back to leg
• Localized numbness or tingling
• Burning sensation in the thigh or side of the leg
• Hip or buttock pain, difficulty sitting
• Constant tightness in the lower back
Proper assessment is essential to identify the true cause and receive treatment that matches your body’s structural needs.
