Everyday moments shape how our children see their bodies - and small changes can make a big difference. 1) Commenting on your own appearance (“Ugh, my tummy!”) normalises self‑critique. Try narrating what your body does for you instead: “My legs helped me chase the dog today.” 2) Praising weight as a marker of success teaches value based on size. Focus on strengths like kindness, effort and curiosity. 3) Using food as reward or punishment links emotions to eating. Offer neutral, consistent responses to behaviour and share enjoyable, non‑food activities. In my book I share gentle scripts and simple habits you can try at home to build body-positive routines.

I meant to share this during Eating Disorders Awareness Week, but life got busy. I'm looking for a new publisher for my book, though I do have some at home. DM or comment if interested. Let's give kids a childhood free from diet culture.

As a parent, simple words can change how a child feels about their body - instantly. Try swapping judgment or reassurance that focuses on size with phrases that help them feel seen and safe: “I hear you” instead of “You’re fine”; “What do you need right now?” instead of “Don’t worry”; “That sounds hard” instead of “You’re overreacting”; “Tell me more” instead of rushing to fix it. These small language shifts create space for emotion and build trust - I’ve seen it calm tantrums and open honest chats in my own family.

I remember the small, everyday moments that felt harmless - family talk about diets, teasing about weight, praise tied to appearance.
Did you noticed any of these behaviours at home? How did they affect your relationship with food and your body? Share a thought or question below - let’s support each other.

I’ve noticed how easy it is to reach for compliments about appearance - but what if we praised effort, kindness and resilience instead? Try these simple swaps with your child: “You worked so hard on that” instead of “You’re so pretty,” “You stayed calm and helpful” instead of “You look great,” and “You figured that out” instead of “You've got so big.” These shifts support body acceptance and help children build lasting self-worth, not just a focus on looks. Want more practical, everyday examples you can use at home?
