When are we gonna realise that blindly trusting people whose qualification came out of a cereal box isn't a good idea?

Nutrition is a very nebulous/hard to define term.

Like yeah it's about eating...

but how can an autistic, food avoidant person like me and someone who struggles to avoid overeating and is scared of carbs fattening them eat the same?

We can't!

We have to take the data we have and make it fit our lives.

It's not just about getting there as fast as you can.

It's about getting there in one piece, with a method you can repeat consistently!

Too hot, too cold, just right.

Too soft, too hard, juuuust right.

Once again kids books are teachng us adults how to live.

Whilst I understand the desire to chase after your goal with two hands forward and at full pelt, it's a good way to be eating the pavement...especially if ya dunno how to sprint.

Finding your 'Minimum effective dose' that is - the amount of progress in a week/month you'd be HAPPY with, and you can CONSISTENTLY PERFORM.

Easiest way to do this is to find out the BARE minimum you can do, the MAX you could do before completely burning out and finding the average between the two.

Adjust as you go, just like in cooking.

Obvs we all want to lose fat quicker so we can go back to eating regularly, but it's really hard to make yourself adhere to ridiculous fat loss or weight change programmes.

Therefore, be Goldilocks. Find the right amount for you and chase it.

You might take a bit longer but at least you won't have any other issues when it comes to transitioning out of your diet or programme.

All fat loss is based on consistency.

Just like in marathons, Mo Farah's jogging pace is your sprint pace.

Context is KEY, innit.

So when it comes to managing hunger, avoid these

1. 'Balancing' calories. If you overeat, don't compensate the next day. Get back on 'track'. The overeaten calories are gone.

2. If you struggle to eat protein, pair it with something you enjoy. You like Mac n cheese? Fire into some diced chicken breast & paprika.

3. You cannot be 60 years old and crying into a bowl of celery. Just have an apple or something. But stop being lazy about finding different, new ways to engage with your nutrition cause it ain't going anywhere!!

Namaste, pals.

The only thing that matters for exercise preferences are

1. What doesn't hurt to perform?
2. What lets you stretch your muscles most?
3. What do you feel most confident doing?
4. What exercises do you enjoy most that work that muscle?

Everything else is variation. Your knee is still attached to your thigh whether you do a squat, lunge or leg press.

Whatever exercise stretches the muscles you’re trying to train and you can perform confidently is the BEST exercise.

Try to pick exercises you can perform consistently and with confidence.

What's better than looking like you're auditioning as a stunt double for Boogie Nights?

Being able to hang weights off your gigantic phallus, obviously.

I couldn't be bothered to look further into this kit tbh because it makes me irrationally annoyed.

I can't tell if I'm the creep for thinking it looks like Lovehoney's latest drop but I promise you that if you just hold the dumbbells close to your side and fold the hips, you won't have to wear a Gundam Wing looking pleasure toy.

This is like fitness trackers - cool if you want to have weird, fancy s**t but an unnecessary add-on to your fitness toolbox.

Psst, dieting/fat loss is about eating less without feeling like you're eating less.

We want more food volume for our belly

More protein to slow down our digestion rate

To chase satiety & satiation rather than try to be "disciplined" when we're fu***ng hungry.

Yeah dieting/fat loss does suck a lil, yeah you will be a bit hungry at the start.

But unless you're trying to get down to less than 10%/18% body fat (men/women difference, innit)...it shouldn't make you suffer.

P.S. I have a guide on how to manage your hunger and cravings - it's in my latest email series.

Sign up for them and I'll send it over today.

Gentle reminder that body dissatisfaction doesn't change by weighing less.

I'm no less depressed than I was 15kg heavier.

There's no value in punishing yourself for choices you made throughout the year.

You can leave food on the plate and still enjoy yourself.

Equally you can overeat on pigs in blankets and sprouts without feeling bad.

If you can't, you maybe don't wanna focus on direct fat loss in the new year.

Maybe focus on being less of a c**t to yourself, and see how you get on with that next year.

Spoilers: A mixed approach is gonna be best.

MyFitnessPal or any food tracker is going to more binary or rigid in nature - numbers don't have feelings.

Numbers also don't take into account the emotional/social aspect of food.

Gash PTs will talk about 'discipline' because you had a stressful day and wanted a kit-kat.

MyFitnessPal isn't inherently bad - it's just a tool, and one we shouldn't overly rely on but see as a tool to be used in APPROPRIATE situations.

Mindful eating - more of a practise than a tool, but this involves utilising our built in systems for assessing how much food we need, as well as stopping us from over or under-eating.

It does require more time to perfect, but being able to stop when you're just less than full is more appropriate for long term nutrition than carrying Tupperware around with you.

Next time you're considering a diet or trying to improve your nutrient intake consider a pick'n'mix approach.

Take that which affects your nutrition and find the method that doesn't cause you to spiral or have an excessively negative reaction to it.

Imagine you're allergic to MyFitnessPal but NOT the idea of tracking protein through a food diary or even just using MFP for protein scanning.

Or go buy a meal plan and cry that you're worse off come the end of January....

Sleep's a pan and if you don't need to be boxing with malevolent supernatural evils, this may be the one for you.

When it comes to a solid night's sleep, there's three big things we can focus on

Coffee, winding down and managing our breathe.

Avoiding high doses of caffeine after mid-day is a good rule of thumb to ensure your mind isn't trying to fight off sleep with the help of rocket fuel.

A wind down routine puts your body and brain in a position to more easily relax into a deeper sleep - it also encourages a regular sleep schedule which is also super beneficial.

Lastly, breathe work - the only thing snipers and yogis have in common.

Breathe work like this is traditionally used in managing anxiety or stress but can also help bring ourselves into that 'zone' for sleep.

It helps us focus but doesn't feel as silly as counting sheep. You're also doing it already so it's not like it's a big ask.

Knowing how to eat like a human being is more useful for your goals than scanning barcodes.

Weird, innit.

Understanding the practical application of nutritional principles is gonna serve you better in the long term than knowing you need to eat less & move more.

For example, if you felt fuller for longer by eating the right combination of foods...

And taking the appropriate amount of time to make sure your body gets all the tastes & textures from your meal..

You probably wouldn't need a calorie tracker.

By learning food techniques so you look forward to your food, you might find you're not butt-ordering Uber Eats on your way home.

By knowing how much of each nutrient you need, and learning how that fits your life, you could maybe ENJOY food and not dread the 'New Year, New Me' cycle.

Meeeeh not like I know anything (that's sarcasm, btw, I defos do and you should listen to moi)

Namaste, pals.
