These warning signs are frequently overlooked, dismissed as stress, laziness, or "just a bad week," but when they persist for more than two weeks, they may indicate a developing depressive disorder.

1. Increased Irritability and Short Temper: Rather than sadness, many people (particularly men) experience a "short fuse," becoming easily annoyed or angry over minor inconveniences.

2. Persistent Fatigue Unrelated to Activity: A profound sense of tiredness that does not improve with rest or sleep.

3. โ€Brain Fog" or Difficulty Concentrating: Struggling to focus, trailing off in conversations, or having trouble making simple, daily decisions.

Depression often presents without traditional sadness, manifesting instead as emotional numbness, irritability, or physical fatigue. This depression can feel like emptiness or apathy, particularly in older adults.

If these symptoms last for two weeks or more and interfere with daily life, it is important to seek professional counselling.

Low mood often lifts in a few days, while depression lasts for more than two weeks, significantly affecting daily life, motivation, and enjoyment. Key differences include persistent, severe symptoms like hopelessness, loss of interest, and physical changes in depression.

Self-help steps include setting small, manageable routines, regular exercise and social connection.
