Medicines waste costs NHSGGC £100,000 every day – we need your help to tackle it.

Small steps, big impact
There are things we can all do to help reduce waste:

1. Resist the urge to over-order medicines: Check what medicines you have at home before you re-order, and only order what you really need when you need it
2. Take control of your medication: Speak to your GP, pharmacy team or nurse about reviewing your medication to make sure they are still right for you
3. Know how to dispose of unused medicines: If you have medicines at home that are out of date or no longer required, return them to your local pharmacy for safe disposal.

** Take control of your medication – ask for a medicines review
Contact your GP practice and ask to be referred to the GP practice pharmacy team to discuss if your prescription is still right for you.**

Delivering better health.

Meningitis -Current Outbreak: Advice

Cases remain geographically localised to Kent and there is no evidence of any increased risk or wider spread elsewhere.

You can be reassured that there is no increased risk of MenB or other meningococcal disease in Scotland at present.

Symptoms can include: a high temperature (fever) over 37.5ºC (99.5ºF), severe and worsening headache, rapid breathing, drowsiness or confusion, shivering, vomiting and diarrhoea, cold hands and feet, and joint and muscle pain. Meningococcal disease can also cause a characteristic rash that does not fade when pressed with a glass, stiff neck, and dislike of bright lights.

Urgent medical help should be sought via 999 for an ambulance or through A&E. If assistance is less urgent, contact 111 or your GP.

More information on your local immunisation team and how to obtain your vaccine record is available on NHSinform: Meningitis | NHS inform and Sepsis | NHS inform.

Students are at increased risk of infectious diseases like meningitis and measles.

Shared accommodation, large gatherings, and close contact make college and university settings ideal environments for the spread of these infectious diseases.
The new term is an opportunity to remind students about the free vaccinations offered to them by the NHS in Scotland:
Men
ACWY
Measles, mumps and rubella (MMR)
Human papillomavirus (HPV)

Protect yourself from severe diseases by making sure you're up to date with your vaccinations.

Five Things You Can Do to Avoid Being Ill This Christmas

NHSGGC shares simple steps to stay healthy and keep healthcare services free for those who need them most

Everyone wants to avoid coughs, colds, and unexpected trips to A&E this Christmas. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is urging people to take simple steps to stay well this winter and help keep healthcare services available for those who need them most.

Five of the easiest things you can do to avoid being ill this Christmas are:

1. Get Your Winter Vaccine
Vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and those around you from serious illness. If you’re eligible, make sure you’ve booked your appointment or visit one of NHSGGC’s drop-in clinics. Check www.nhsggc.scot for dates and locations.

2. Start by treating from home and knowing where to go next, if needed. If you need help this time of year, think ‘Right Care, Right Place.’ Many minor injuries and illnesses can be managed from home. If you do need more help, start by accessing healthcare within your community, such as by contacting your local pharmacy, dentist, optician, or GP. Pharmacy First also offers free advice and treatment for impetigo and uncomplicated urinary tract infections at pharmacies, helping eligible patients get faster care without needing a GP appointment.

If it’s more serious, you’re unsure, or your community services are closed, call NHS 24 on 111. Remember, A&E is for life-threatening emergencies only.

3. Wash Your Hands – Often
Winter bugs and illnesses are likely to spread in homes, offices, and at parties at this time of year. Regular handwashing with soap and warm water is one of the simplest ways to prevent the spread of germs. Encourage kids to make it fun – sing a festive tune, like Jingle Bells, while scrubbing!

4. Have a Supply of Over-the-counter Remedies
Don’t let a sore throat or upset stomach ruin your Christmas. Keep a supply of over-the-counter remedies at home for you and your family, such as paracetamol, ibuprofen, indigestion tablets, and a basic first aid kit. This helps you manage minor illnesses at home without having to go to the shops when you’re unwell and potentially passing it on to others.

5. Take Care of Yourself
The festive season can be stressful, and it's easy to overindulge in rich food, late nights, and alcohol. While enjoying celebrations is important, looking after your physical and mental health will help you feel your best and avoid illness. Make time for rest, stay hydrated, and keep moving outside or around the house if conditions are dangerous.

Dr Claire Harrow, Deputy Medical Director for Acute Services, said: By following these simple steps, you can enjoy a healthier, happier Christmas and help keep healthcare services available for those who need it most.

“If you do need medical help during the festive period, think ‘Right Care, Right Place’. Many minor injuries and illnesses can be managed at home, while even more conditions can be treated in the community. If services are closed, be sure to phone NHS 24 on 111 in the first instance.”
