It’s official! Walking improves and may even deter low back pain.

A study that looked at data of over eleven thousand adult participants from Norway, found that daily walking was inversely associated with occurrence of lower back pain. Those who walked more, had less low back pain, compared to those who walked less.

How fast one walked seemed to have less effect on the occurrence (of lower back pain) than the length of time walked.

What a low hanging fruit!

Low back pain is one of key complaints I see at the clinic, and one of the leading reasons people have to take sick leave from work.

Just a personal footnote: do ensure you have good shoes, which support proper alignment of your foot and ankles. Good, appropriate shoes can save you for issue with knees and hips. If you have any foot issues such as overt pronation, do visit a good sports podiatrist to see if you need supportive insoles.

Sleep deprivation and pain

Not only can we get mentally and emotionally cranky after a badly slept night, but a loss of sleep can lead to increased sensitivity to pain.

Exposing your eyes to the morning light (yes, even if it is overcast!☁️) can help reset the circadian rhythm, aiding good natural sleep cycle.

The biggest challenge these days for folks seems to be avoiding screen time in the evenings… however, this may be a must especially for those who really struggle with their sleep. The blue light from our gadgets do interfere with the production of melatonin, our sleep hormone 😒

The fantastic sleep researcher Matthew Walker (author of Why We Sleep) has done a ton of in-depth interviews, which drill into the importance of good, sound sleep… if you’re interested to learn more, simply tuck into any of the interviews with him (my favourite one being the 3 part podcast he did with with Dr Peter Attia.. all and all about 5h long!)

So… if you’re feeling achey, do ask yourself if you’re sleeping OK. Then run a magnesium bath - and then book a massage 🙌 (I would say that tho, would I not)
