I had a lovely afternoon yesterday meeting with the Weston-super-Mare Osteoporosis Group.
Teaching a 40min Osteoporosis friendly chair yoga class and going through a relaxing body scan. 🪑 🧘♀️
🦴 How yoga helps osteoporosis
1. Builds bone strength (indirectly)
Weight-bearing yoga poses (like standing postures) gently stress your bones, which can stimulate bone maintenance. While it won’t reverse osteoporosis on its own, it helps slow bone loss.
2. Improves balance and coordination
Falls are a major risk with osteoporosis. Yoga enhances balance and body awareness, reducing the likelihood of fractures.
3. Strengthens muscles that support bones
Stronger muscles—especially around the spine, hips, and legs—help stabilize your skeleton and reduce strain on fragile bones.
4. Encourages better posture
Osteoporosis often affects the spine, leading to a hunched posture. Yoga promotes spinal alignment and strengthens back muscles, helping you stand taller and reduce pressure on vertebrae.
5. Reduces stress
Chronic stress can negatively affect bone health. Yoga’s breathing and relaxation techniques support overall wellbeing.
⚠️ Important precautions
Not all yoga is safe if you have osteoporosis. Some movements can increase fracture risk.
Avoid or modify:
• Deep forward bends (especially rounding the spine)
• Twisting the spine forcefully
• High-impact transitions or jumps
• Extreme flexion of the back
Focus on:
• Gentle, controlled movements
• Neutral spine alignment
• Slow transitions between poses
