Problems with memory are the most common symptom of Alzheimer’s disease, but did you know around 1 in 20 people with Alzheimer’s have different early symptoms?

This is called ‘atypical’ Alzheimer’s disease, and one type is posterior cortical atrophy (PCA).

For we wanted to share some of the signs and symptoms of this less-common type of dementia.

At first, PCA mainly affects the back of the brain, which is the part of the brain that processes information that comes from a person’s eyes and turns it into what the person sees.

That means that the first signs someone might notice are often subtle problems with their vision.

This graphic shows some examples of what that might look like.

Once someone starts to notice symptoms, it can take a long time to confirm that sight problems are caused by damage to the brain rather than by eye problems.

Sadly, this means there may be a delay of several months or even years before the person gets an accurate diagnosis of PCA, which can cause a lot of frustration and worry.

If you notice these symptoms in yourself or someone else, it’s really important to speak to your GP.

A new community wellbeing hub is set to be developed in Glossop after almost £200,000 in funding was awarded by the Mayor of the East Midlands.

Mayor Claire Ward has awarded £191,570 to community wellbeing charity The Bureau from her £3 million Community Development Fund. The funding will be used to develop the Gamesley Wellbeing Hub, based at Gamesley Community Centre, where the Mayor officially launched the fund last year.

Gamesley is one of 10 neighbourhoods across the East Midlands Combined County Authority (EMCCA) area chosen for investment after they were identified as facing high levels of disadvantage and having fewer local community and voluntary organisations than other areas.

Mayor Claire said: “Communities like Gamesley know better than anyone what they need to thrive, and this funding is about backing local people to lead change in their own neighbourhoods.

“This investment will further help turn Gamesley Community Centre into a welcoming, accessible hub where residents can connect, support one another, and access health, wellbeing and employment opportunities close to home.

“By supporting community-led projects like this one, we’re building stronger, healthier neighbourhoods, boosting pride in place, and making sure everyone across our region has the chance to share in its future.”

Community-led schemes in the key areas have now each been awarded up to £300,000 to support projects designed to build skills, strengthen resilience and help residents shape the future of their own neighbourhoods.

Natalie Rhodes, The Bureau's Chief Officer, said: “We’re delighted to receive this funding, which will help secure Gamesley Community Centre as a welcoming, community-led hub.

“It means local people can connect, improve their health and wellbeing, and access new opportunities close to home. We’re proud to be working alongside residents and partners to create something that will make a lasting difference.”

Plans for the wellbeing hub include social prescribing, NHS health outreach, social connectedness, volunteering and employability programmes, and a range of social, educational and wellbeing activities.

The scheme aims to improve wellbeing, reduce isolation and increase volunteering, employability, entrepreneurship and active lifestyles.

In its application, The Bureau said: “We want to secure and grow Gamesley Community Centre as a welcoming, community-led health and wellbeing ‘Hub’ where people can connect, be active and get support when they need it.

“Working with local residents, The Bureau, Gamesley Community Group CIO and partners will bring health, sport, learning and volunteering under one roof.

“Together we’ll improve the building and facilities, create more opportunities for young people and families, offer health and wellbeing activities in partnership with the NHS and local services, and develop volunteering and skills pathways.

“This is about giving local people more choice and control, improving health and confidence and increasing opportunities for work.”
