The NHS Breast Screening Van is coming to Glossop, providing an important opportunity for women to take control of their health.
The van will be stationed at Tesco Glossop from February until the end of July 2026, offering free breast screening appointments to eligible women.
π· Why Breast Screening Matters:
Breast screening is a vital tool for early detection of breast cancer, particularly for women who do not yet have symptoms. Detecting cancer early can make treatment more effective and may reduce the need for invasive procedures such as breast removal. The screening involves a quick mammogram, performed by a female mammographer, and results are provided within two weeks.
π· Who Can Attend:
Women aged 50 up to their 71st birthday, registered with a GP as female and without any breast cancer symptoms, are automatically invited for screening. Appointments are staggered by GP practice:
β’ Cottage Lane Surgery: February
β’ Lambsgate Health Centre: February-March
β’ Manor House Surgery: April-July
β’ Simmondley Medical Practice: July
Some patients may receive invitations outside these periods. Women over 71 who have not had a breast screening in the last three years can also request an appointment.
π· Appointment Times:
β’ Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9am - 4:30pm
β’ Thursday evenings: 12pm - 8pm
Women will be automatically invited, but those who have not received an invitation by their 53rd birthday should contact the screening office.
π· Extra Support:
Transport: Women who need help getting to the van due to mobility issues or limited public transport can contact Jan at The Bureau Car-Share Scheme. There are reserved spots for a return fee of Β£3. Call 01457 865 722 or email jan@the-bureau.org.uk.
Bosom Buddy Scheme: If you would like to attend with a friend or family member, you can request a joint appointment slot at the screening office.
π· Important Reminder:
The NHS Breast Screening Van will not return to Glossop until 2029, so itβs a unique opportunity for local women to get screened locally. Women who miss their appointment can still rebook, but will need to travel to Ashton or other locations.
π· Further Assessment and Treatment:
If further tests are required, patients will attend Wythenshawe Hospital in South Manchester. Subsequent treatment can be continued there or transferred closer to home.
