Did you know that it’s national tinnitus awareness week this week (6th-12th February).
Tinnitus is the sensation of hearing a sound when there is no external source for that particular sound. It can come in many different forms including ringing, whistling, buzzing, shushing and more. The pitch and volume can vary as well as the intensity and intrusiveness of the sound. Tinnitus can be both temporary or permanent and can be unilateral or bilateral (one side or both).
Having a completely blocked ear can cause tinnitus and whilst annoying or distracting, it is usually only a temporary side effect of the ear wax and normally goes away as soon as the ear has been cleared. Long term tinnitus sufferers may find that their tinnitus becomes more noticeable when they have a blocked ear.
If your tinnitus is not ear wax related, there are some good online resources available and you can also speak to your GP about it. Cognitive therapies, relaxation techniques and specific tinnitus masking devices can be helpful. Having other sounds present when you are in quiet environments can also help distract your brain away from the internal signal, this is called passive listening.
If you experience tinnitus, lasting longer than 5 minutes at a time, it may well just be an ear wax problem. Book your ear wax removal consultation with us online or call us for more information, help or advice.
