It’s hot out there, and staying well hydrated is important as we lose more fluids through sweating.

Hydration is essential for thermoregulation and supports many other bodily functions including joint lubrication and transport of nutrients to (and waste products from) our body tissues.

Optimal fluid intake is typically between 1.5 and 2 litres a day, but more in high heat if we are sweating more. Consider adding a little fruit juice or a pinch of salt to water to provide electrolytes, which help maintain hydration of tissues.

Note that alcoholic drinks do not contribute to hydration as they are diuretic – they make you wee more.

As a guide, your urine stream should be a pale yellow.

One of the best instructions I’ve heard for meditation practice was given by Thai Buddhist teacher Ajahn Buddhadasa: “Do not do anything that takes you away from your body.”

The body lives in the present. When you are aware of the body, you are connected with living presence—the one place where you can see reality, see what is actually happening. Awareness of the body is our gateway into the truth of what is.
