As qualified shipwrights, attention to detail and exemplary craftsmanship come as second nature. We ensure high levels of quality in both our service and in our finished products, putting every effort into using only the best hardwoods, all from sustainable sources. Care for the environment is very much at the heart of our work. Our passion and pride for functional art is essential to us, as well as meeting your requirements. We endeavour to make the service as personal as we are able. Whether a small engraving idea or meeting big orders with specific time scales, we’re always happy to discuss your requirements. We aim to provide a service that is personal, unique and bespoke. Ideally located, we are based in the heart of the Gloucestershire countryside, nestled in the banks of the river Severn. In close proximity to both Gloucester Docks and with close by motorway access, we have a well adapted facility and workshopspace able to cater to the needs of almost any given wooden project. More specifically being able to house and build Masts & Spars up to 100’ in length in any one of our two workshops. Last week we delivered a very special dining table commission ✨ Handcrafted from cedar felled in our customer’s own garden, this piece holds memories as well as beauty. They asked us to transform their timber into a table that could be enjoyed for generations to come – and it was a joy to bring their vision to life.

We love creating pieces with such meaning, where the story of the wood continues in the heart of the home. 💛

Our Story

FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP & SUSTAINABLE WOODWORKING

The Fine Wooden Article Co. has its roots in England’s South West, where founder Peter Meredith found a passion for woodworking as a teenager, training as a shipwright, then as a naval architect specialised in the classic yacht manufacture and restoration industry. By the by, his love of wood & a passion for form and function naturally evolved into the creation of unique, hand-crafted fine hardwood designs. Ingenious craftsmanship and exemplary attention to detail has allowed The Fine Wooden Article Co. to grow from commission to commission, strength to strength.

We believe that good design is founded on sustainable resource management, so we work only with responsibly sourced English hardwoods from our own managed ancient indigenous broadleaf woodlands in Devon, or through links with local tree-surgery and land management operations.

We take our inspiration from the natural qualities of the wood and the character of each piece we work with so that you may come to own a true piece of English heritage. Equally, our designs are informed by our clients – every effort goes into providing you with a personal, bespoke service and engaging you in the design process.
