Our hospitals are exceptionally full and as a result we have declared a Business Continuity Incident, which is our highest level of escalation.
We are pulling out all the stops to create capacity by discharging those patients who have completed their treatment and no longer need to be in one of our acute care beds.
However, services in the community are also under pressure so timely discharge of those patients who are ready to leave hospital is currently a challenge. This is causing a backlog.
You can do your bit to help us.
If you have a loved one who has completed their treatment and they’ve been told they can leave hospital, please do everything you can to support their discharge.
By providing this vital support you’ll not only be helping us to provide timely care to those patients who are waiting for a bed, but you’ll be helping your loved one to recover better.
Hospital’s the best place to be for anyone needing acute care following a serious illness, injury or surgery. But staying in an acute care bed once treatment is complete can prolong recovery by weakening muscles, exposing the person to greater risk of infection and generally impacting on their wellbeing including their mental health.
Returning home to familiar surroundings as soon as possible helps people feel more like themselves, especially if they can build up their strength by moving around, sleeping in their own beds and regaining normal routines.
