We believe healthcare should be personal, accessible and available when you need it most.

πŸ“± Why not give us a call or send us a WhatsApp Business message for a free, no-obligation chat? We're always happy to discuss whether our service would be suitable for you, your family, your employees or an elderly relative.

🚨 Could you recognise a dangerously high blood pressure reading? Most people can't.

🩺 HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: THE "SILENT" HEALTH RISK MANY PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THEY HAVE

Many people with high blood pressure feel completely well.

In fact, hypertension often causes no symptoms at all until it has already started increasing the risk of:

❀️ Heart attack
🧠 Stroke
🩺 Kidney disease
πŸ‘οΈ Vision problems
🍬 Complications associated with diabetes

As part of Type 2 Diabetes Prevention Week, health organisations across the UK are encouraging people to know their blood pressure numbers.

πŸ“Š WHAT SHOULD YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE BE?

Generally, blood pressure is considered high if it is:

β€’ 140/90 mmHg or above when checked by a healthcare professional
β€’ 135/85 mmHg or above when checked at home

You can compare your readings with NHS guidance here:

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/high-blood-pressure/

πŸ“ˆ UK BLOOD PRESSURE STAGES

🟒 Normal Home Blood Pressure
Below 135/85 mmHg

🟑 Stage 1 Hypertension
135/85 to 149/94 mmHg

🟠 Stage 2 Hypertension
150/95 mmHg or above

πŸ”΄ Severe Hypertension
180/120 mmHg or above

☎️ WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOUR READINGS ARE HIGH?

If your average home blood pressure readings fall into the Stage 1 or Stage 2 hypertension ranges, you should contact your GP surgery for further advice, even if you feel completely well.

High blood pressure often causes no symptoms, but over time it can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and other health problems.

Most GP practices will want to see a week's worth of home readings before deciding whether any further assessment, monitoring or treatment is needed.

🚨 HYPERTENSIVE CRISIS – DON'T IGNORE IT 🚨

A blood pressure reading of 180/120 mmHg or higher is considered severely elevated and may represent a hypertensive crisis.

If your blood pressure is consistently at or above this level, particularly if you have symptoms such as:

β€’ Chest pain
β€’ Severe headache
β€’ Breathlessness
β€’ Confusion
β€’ Weakness or numbness
β€’ Visual disturbance
β€’ Dizziness
β€’ Symptoms suggestive of a stroke

⚠️ DO NOT WAIT FOR A ROUTINE GP APPOINTMENT.

πŸ₯ SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ASSESSMENT THE SAME DAY.

In many cases this means attending A&E immediately, particularly if symptoms are present.

Even if you feel well, a reading this high should never be ignored and requires prompt medical advice.

🏠 HOME MONITORS DON'T NEED TO BE EXPENSIVE

Reliable upper-arm blood pressure monitors are widely available online and in pharmacies from around Β£15–£20.

Look for:

βœ… CE mark
βœ… UKCA mark
βœ… Upper-arm cuff design

Many GP practices now prefer home blood pressure readings because they often provide a more accurate picture of your usual blood pressure.

πŸ“ IF YOUR GP ASKS YOU TO MONITOR AT HOME

Most practices will usually ask for:

βœ… Morning readings
βœ… Evening readings
βœ… 7 consecutive days of readings
βœ… Two readings each time, taken 1–2 minutes apart
βœ… Your full name and date of birth on the form

πŸ’‘ TOP TIPS FOR ACCURATE READINGS

β€’ Sit quietly for 5 minutes before checking
β€’ Keep both feet flat on the floor
β€’ Don't talk during the reading
β€’ Avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for around 30 minutes beforehand
β€’ Use the same arm each time if possible

πŸ“‹ FREE GP HOME BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING FORM

We've created a professional blood pressure monitoring form that you can print or complete electronically.

Many GP surgeries will accept completed forms via the NHS App or Accurx, or you can simply take it directly to your GP surgery.

πŸ’¬ To receive a FREE copy, simply send a WhatsApp Business message to:

28/05/2026

🀧 Hay fever sufferers β€” this weekend may be rough locally.

Current forecasts suggest HIGH grass pollen levels across Stamford, Peterborough, Huntingdon and Cambridge this weekend, especially during warm, dry and breezy conditions.

A few things many people DON’T realise:

🌾 Pollen counts are often highest between 5am–10am and again in the evening
🚿 Showering and changing clothes after being outside can make a big difference
πŸ•ΆοΈ Sunglasses can help reduce pollen irritation to the eyes
🏠 Keeping windows closed early morning may help indoors
πŸš— Car cabin pollen filters are often forgotten β€” but can massively affect symptoms

πŸ’Š Over-the-counter antihistamines such as Cetirizine or Loratadine help many people, especially if started BEFORE symptoms become severe.

Other things people often find helpful:
βœ… Saline nasal rinses/sprays
βœ… Drying clothes indoors on high pollen days
βœ… Applying a small amount of petroleum jelly around the nostrils to trap pollen
βœ… Avoiding mowing grass where possible

⚠️ If symptoms are severe, persistent, affecting sleep, causing wheeze/asthma flare-ups or over-the-counter medication is not helping, stronger prescription-only treatment may sometimes be needed.

At Healthvisit, our NHS-trained Advanced Practitioners and Independent Prescribers can assess a wide range of minor illnesses and allergies at home.

βœ… Prescription treatment when clinically appropriate

β˜€οΈ HEATWAVE WARNING β€” CAMBRIDGESHIRE COULD REACH 33Β°C TODAY β˜€οΈ

According to the BBC, temperatures like those forecast today have not been seen in May since 1944.

This is not just β€œnice weather.”
Even a few extra degrees can rapidly become dangerous β€” especially in the UK where many homes trap heat and often lack air conditioning.

πŸš— TOP TIP:
While many UK homes do not have air conditioning, most people do have access to a car with air conditioning. If somebody is becoming overheated and you cannot cool them effectively indoors, sitting safely in an air-conditioned vehicle for a short period may help lower body temperature while you continue cooling measures and seek medical advice if needed.

🚨 HEAT EXHAUSTION vs HEAT STROKE β€” WHY PEOPLE GET THEM CONFUSED

Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are both caused by the body overheating, but they are NOT the same thing.

🟠 HEAT EXHAUSTION IS SERIOUS
Symptoms often improve with rapid cooling, fluids and rest β€” but if ignored, heat exhaustion can progress into heat stroke.

πŸ”΄ HEAT STROKE IS A LIFE-THREATENING MEDICAL EMERGENCY THAT REQUIRES URGENT HOSPITAL TREATMENT
Heat stroke can rapidly lead to organ failure, unconsciousness and death if emergency treatment is delayed.

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🟠 SIGNS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION

Symptoms can include:
β€’ Heavy sweating
β€’ Dizziness or faintness
β€’ Headache
β€’ Feeling sick or vomiting
β€’ Muscle cramps
β€’ Weakness or tiredness
β€’ Pale, clammy skin
β€’ Fast breathing or pulse
β€’ Intense thirst

βœ… WHAT TO DO:
β€’ Move the person somewhere cool
β€’ Encourage cool fluids/water
β€’ Loosen or remove excess clothing
β€’ Use cool wet cloths/fans if available
β€’ Rest with legs slightly raised if dizzy

Most people should improve within 30 minutes.

⚠️ IF THEY DO NOT IMPROVE, CALL NHS 111 OR SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE.

πŸ”— NHS heat exhaustion and heatstroke advice:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ”΄ SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE (MEDICAL EMERGENCY)

Heat stroke happens when the body loses the ability to cool itself and core temperature rises dangerously high.

Symptoms can include:
β€’ Confusion or unusual behaviour
β€’ Collapse or unconsciousness
β€’ Seizures
β€’ Severe shortness of breath
β€’ Very high body temperature
β€’ Hot skin that may become dry
β€’ Loss of coordination
β€’ Slurred speech
β€’ Not responding normally

🚨 CALL 999 IMMEDIATELY IF YOU SUSPECT HEAT STROKE.

πŸš‘ Heat stroke requires urgent hospital assessment and treatment.

While waiting for help:
β€’ Move them somewhere cool
β€’ Remove excess clothing
β€’ Cool with wet cloths/fans
β€’ If conscious, small sips of cool water may help
β€’ Do NOT leave them alone

πŸ”— NHS heatstroke emergency guidance:
https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/heat-exhaustion-heatstroke/

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

🐢 PETS CAN ALSO SUFFER HEAT EXHAUSTION & HEAT STROKE

Dogs and cats are especially vulnerable in hot weather.

⚠️ Signs in pets can include:
β€’ Excessive panting
β€’ Drooling
β€’ Lethargy or weakness
β€’ Vomiting
β€’ Collapse
β€’ Confusion or wobbliness

🚫 Never leave pets in cars β€” even briefly.

βœ… WHAT TO DO:
β€’ Move them to shade/cool indoors
β€’ Offer cool (not ice cold) water
β€’ Use cool wet towels on paws/body
β€’ Contact a vet urgently if symptoms are severe or not improving

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

πŸ’‘ PRACTICAL HOT WEATHER TIPS

βœ… Keep curtains/blinds closed during hottest hours
βœ… Open windows overnight if safe
βœ… Consider opening loft hatches upstairs in some homes to release trapped heat
βœ… Avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon temperatures
βœ… Check on elderly relatives, neighbours & vulnerable people
βœ… Keep hydrated even if you don’t feel thirsty

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

β˜€οΈ Sunny and 30Β°C today… which means a lot more skin is on show.

Hot weather is also a good reminder to quickly check moles and skin changes on yourself and loved ones.

Remember the ABCDE warning signs:

πŸ”Ή A – Asymmetry
πŸ”Ή B – Border irregularity
πŸ”Ή C – Colour changes
πŸ”Ή D – Diameter increasing
πŸ”Ή E – Evolving or changing over time

If a mole looks unusual, changes, bleeds, crusts, becomes itchy, or simply doesn’t seem right β€” it’s worth getting checked.
