Hands At Work, Mind At Ease – How Crafting Can Help Emotional Regulation

It is no secret that when it comes to mental health, women have reported higher rates of mental health complications since 1993, based on a recurring study which is held every seven years by the Adult Psychiatry Morbidity Survey.

A study conducted by the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey in 2023 and 2024 found that around 20.2% of all adults in the UK are diagnosed with a mental health issue, but, at the time of the study, it was found that the rates of mental health issues were higher in women (24.2%) than in men (15.4%). Younger people between the ages of 16 and 24 have even higher rates, increasing from 18.9% in 2014 to 22.6% in 2024.

This age cohort has seen more focus over the past decade or so as being the manifestation age for a whole host of adult issues including eating disorders, relationship difficulties, harmful s*xualised behaviours, bullying, emerging personality difficulties and early onset psychosis. We are seeing increasing numbers of referrals of children who are experiencing psychological distress as a result of bullying via social media and exposure to adult material for example and schools who are unable to cope.

Problems that arise in early childhood may be indicative of underlying conditions or emerging pathologies. Challenges or delays in developmental milestones are of note, as well as any difficulties associated with feeding, sleeping, toileting, attachments, trauma, intellectual and neuro difficulties, and general behavioural or conduct problems. Assessment and intervention at this stage is primarily conducted via observation and with the caregiver given this early stage in development, and typical problems encountered include social and communication difficulties, educational attainment challenges, and attachment and separation anxieties for example.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based therapy which can help to reduce distress and improve your ability to function. The way Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can be accessed has changed a lot; people can access CBT online and over the telephone as well as face to face contact with a therapist.
How does CBT work?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) works by breaking down the issue into smaller parts. This is a useful technique as it allows the therapist to work with you to identify how the issue affects you emotionally, psychologically, physically and what behavioural responses you have towards that issue. Often people get stuck in a pattern of repeated thinking behaviour which can be unhelpful or often negative.
CBT works by challenging the way you think about certain issues and changing it. CBT encourages you to reframe your thought process and explore alternative ways of thinking which can improve decision making.
