10 Misconceptions About Trauma
Trauma is often misunderstood, and these misconceptions can prevent people from seeking the help they need. Here are some common myths:
1️⃣ Trauma only comes from extreme events – Trauma can stem from any distressing experience, not just life-threatening situations.
2️⃣ If you don’t remember it, it didn’t affect you – The brain can store trauma in ways you may not consciously recall, but it still impacts emotions and behavior.
3️⃣ Time heals all wounds – Without proper support, trauma can linger for years. Healing requires intentional processing.
4️⃣ Only weak people experience trauma – Trauma affects everyone, regardless of strength or resilience. Seeking help is a sign of courage.
5️⃣ Talking about trauma makes it worse – Processing trauma in a safe space can actually be a key part of healing.
6️⃣ Children are too young to experience trauma – Kids can be deeply affected by distressing experiences, even if they can’t express it in words.
7️⃣ You have to experience physical harm for it to be trauma – Emotional and psychological wounds can be just as damaging as physical ones.
8️⃣ Trauma always leads to PTSD – While trauma can contribute to PTSD, not everyone who experiences trauma develops the disorder.
9️⃣ If you seem ‘fine,’ you weren’t really traumatized – Trauma responses can be hidden, and some people mask their struggles well.
🔟 You just need to “get over it” – Healing takes time, support, and often professional help. Trauma is not a choice, but healing is possible.
