Recently, three of our hospice families enjoyed an unforgettable night at St. James' Park, watching Newcastle United take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup. ⚽
For Paul and his son Charlie, it was a really special experience after Charlie’s mum, Kelly, died on our Adult Inpatient Unit earlier this year.
Paul shared what the experience meant to them:
"As Charlie’s dad, I can honestly say the Newcastle v Spurs cup game was an experience my son will never forget. Watching his face light up as he took in the atmosphere at St. James’ Park was something truly special – a moment I’ll hold onto forever. Since losing his mum, football has played such an important part in helping Charlie cope and heal.
"Following Newcastle United has given him something to look forward to – a sense of hope, excitement, and belonging. Seeing him so happy and caught up in the roar of the crowd meant the world to me. Charlie has always loved sport, whether he’s out playing football or rugby, and it’s been a huge source of strength for him.
"The game reminded me just how powerful sport can be – not only in bringing joy, but in helping us through life’s toughest moments. It was a truly unforgettable night for both of us, and I’m so grateful to everyone who made it possible."
They weren’t the only ones enjoying the match! Harry from our Children and Young Adults Service went with his mam Meryl, and brothers Dylan and Harry from our Bereavement Service were there too – all cheering on the Magpies and having a brilliant time. 🥰
We’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to Together for Short Lives and the Carabao Cup for making this magical experience possible – creating smiles, memories and moments of joy for families across St Oswald’s Hospice. 💙
