As we all know, people with MS have significantly higher rates of loneliness than healthy adults. Acute or chronic health concerns present barriers for MSers to engage in social connections and maintain social bonds.
The Buddy Network is a peer support project that connects newly diagnosed people with MS with a Buddy, an ‘experienced’ person with MS, to lend a listening ear. We believe that chatting with people like you helps you listen, adapt and take charge. MS doesn't mean giving up on your ambitions, just rethinking how to achieve them.
“The Buddy Network has made my diagnosis easier and I feel less lonely. I know that I am not the only one with the same issues and I can talk about my issues with someone that may have to live with the same issues as I do. Really recommend a Buddy.” - MSer
MSers who took part in the Network reported they feel less empty, they generally have more people around they can turn to for support and that they feel closer to these people and they feel less rejected by others.
If you know someone newly diagnosed people who may benefit from chatting to an experienced person with MS, please do signpost them to our service or get in contact with us at hello@shift.ms
