What is yoga?

Patanjali defines yoga in his Yoga Sūtras, as ‘yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind-stuff’.
“yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ”

The ultimate goal whether you’re practising āsana, prāṇāyāma, meditation or yogic techniques is to find Self Realisation. That you are not the chatter of your mind, you are not the role you take in your household, you are not your job title. The yogic techniques teach us to go inwards to find this Realisation and liberation. Liberation from constant suffering.

An introduction to shoulder alignment in downward-facing dog…

1) hugging the arm pits in, externally rotates the shoulders.

Working with this queue 👆🏻 is a great place to begin understanding 1 step towards the alignment of the shoulders in downward facing dog.

When I’m teaching I often see people lose awareness of their arm positioning when they reach their arms above their head. This is very normal and easy to fix, don’t worry.

Try rotating your arm pits towards each other, think triceps pointing back/down. Chest and collarbones broad/open. This will keep your shoulders in an external rotation and stop you from collapsing the space in your neck and upper traps.

EVERY MORNING STRETCH & RESET 🌅….

These are my go to simple, easy & effective stretches that I do EVERY morning! Because it just feels so good! Once you get into a routine this can take just 20 mins and then you’re set for the day 🥰.

1) head circles - relax/take your time and enjoy stretching the neck and throat. X3 each side.

2) cat/cows but adding waves (forward and backwards movement). So freeing! Follow with some relaxed figure 8s. Moving like a snake… spine will love it🐍.

3) downward facing dog. 5 breaths.

4) supine chest stretch. Straight arm of the arm you are stretching or 90 degree bend for something deeper 🌶️. Keep elbow and shoulder at the same height. 5 breaths.

5) cow face arms. Internal and external rotation. Back straight. Use a strap if fingers don’t touch. Be where you need to be to feel gooood✌️. 3-5 breaths.

6) low lunge & optional side bend. 3-5 breaths.

7) half split. Back straight. Bend the extended legs knee if necessary to keep stomach and thigh touching. Imagine your chin stretching to your shin. 5 breaths.

8) any twist! Rotate the trunk! 🌲 this is half lord of the fishes. Twist with the upper back. 3-5 breaths.

SLOOOOW DOWN 💤 🌸

We live in a society where it has become ‘normal’ to be pushing ourselves to our limits and living off cortisol and adrenaline. That is NOT normal….

Add these techniques into your daily life and feel the immediate benefits:

1) Nāḍī śōdhana. Alternate nostril breathing. It works on regulating the nervous system via balancing the energetic pathways through the body and balancing the left and right hemispheres of the brain.

2) Deep diaphragmatic breathing - anyone can do this! It’s simple and easy! 2 minutes a day is enough to reset the nervous system. If you struggle with alternate nostril breathing (it takes practise) then start with this!

3) Meditation - any kind! Just meditate! This is Jappa meditation. Reciting a sacred Sanskrit mantra x108 times. I regularly practise Oṃ śāntiḥ Oṃ (om (universal sound) peace om). TIP: you must connect to the meaning of the mantra and feel it. Do NOT rush. Watch yourself if you become impatient or frustrated and then relax.

4) Enjoy yourself! Grab a bunny if you cannot and have a cuddle 🥰😉. Otherwise any animal companion!

SLOOOOOW DOWN 💤 🌸

We live in a society where it’s ‘normal’ to be running on a fight or flight nervous system. BUT this is NOT normal….

We desperately NEED to SLOW DOWN.

These are some of my FAVOURITE ways to reset my anxiety/stress levels:

1) Nāḍī śōdhana : a yogic breathing technique. Alternate nostril breath. Regulates the nervous system via the energetic pathways throughout the body and balances the left and right hemispheres of the mind.

2) deep diaphragmatic breathing
(perfect place to start if you are new to breathing techniques/relaxation OR it’s just phenomenal for EVERYONE)

3) Meditation - ANY kind! Just meditate! This is JAPPA meditation. It’s simple, anyone can do it. Choose a sacred mantra (Oṃ śāntiḥ Oṃ. Oṃ peace Oṃ). You can use māla beads, helps with concentration and knowing how many rounds you’ve chanted. X108 repetitions. IMPORTANT: it’s the quality of mind you practise with.. you can’t rush or be impatient, you have to relax into the chanting and meditation. Otherwise, it won’t work, you’ll just be frustrated.

4) Grab a bunny.. a no brainer.. cute, cuddly and the best! If you don’t have a bunny any animal companion makes the world of a difference!

A combination of my devotion to both yoga and animals. These 2 entities have also been my saviours. Yoga fills me with so much humility, respect and grounding. Whilst, animals are pure presence and joy. Animals are perfectly yoga (union,harmony, presence with life) and the practise of yoga reminds of us how to treat all beings everywhere with compassion.

Hannah Bateman Yoga Life is rooted in traditional yogic practises that bring the practitioner closer to samādhi (deep meditative absorption). With the proper application and instruction of āsana, guidance through prāṇāyāma, encouragement of mantra recitation, meditation practise & krīya.
