“Today’s employees aren’t just disengaged – they’re actively disconnecting from their colleagues, managers, and leaders at an alarming rate. The signs are everywhere: declining engagement, lower productivity, more people than ever seeking new roles, increasing isolation and burnout, and growing tensions over flexible work. Gallup calls this the “great detachment,” estimating its cost at £8.9tn – that’s 9 per cent of global GDP … “

“The study also highlighted that half (49.5 per cent) of pregnant women, those on maternity leave, or those returning work encounter negative treatment. This included being sacked, bullied, harassed, having flexible working requests denied, breastfeeding discrimination and leaving jobs due to health and safety concerns.

A further third (35.9 per cent) said they were sidelined or demoted whilst pregnant, on maternity leave, or upon returning to work, while 12.4 per cent had been bullied or harassed. Of those who had negative experiences, one in five (20.6 per cent) left their employer.

Research from Pregnant Then Screwed in 2023 found one in 61 pregnant women said their boss suggested they should have an abortion.

Moreover, 64 per cent of pregnant women recalled receiving harmful remarks from their employer or colleagues about their appearance, while 74 per cent reported that their colleagues suggested their work performance had declined due to pregnancy.

Despite these widespread issues, the study found that only 2 per cent of affected women pursued a tribunal claim, the report”

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, there is now a 24/7 dedicated line to call for urgent support.

A person’s emotional or mental state can deteriorate quickly, and this can mean that they are experiencing a mental health crisis or a mental health emergency.

By calling 111 and selecting Option 2, you can reach the Lincolnshire 111 Mental Health Team. They can quickly assess people’s needs and determine the best way to support.

The service is for all ages, including children, and is also open to those with neurodevelopmental needs.

The service is available to anyone facing a mental health crisis, which could include:

• Changes to your mood
• Withdrawing from people (close family, friends, or work colleagues)
• Not taking care of yourself like you usually would
• Having increased thoughts about your life not being worth living
• Excessive worry
• Feeling out of control or unable to cope
• Feeling anxious about leaving the house
• Hearing voices or seeing things that others can’t
• Thinking about harming yourself.

If people have physically harmed themselves, or if their life is at risk, then they should continue to call 999 or go to A&E.

The line is managed by Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (LPFT).

Those who require emotional support or less urgent signposting can continue to call the mental health helpline on 0800 001 4331 and dedicated staff will support people to access the help they need. The phone line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Those seeking emotional wellbeing and mental health support for children and young people can continue to call the Lincolnshire Here4You advice line on 0800 234 6342 (open 24/7). Children and young people can also self-refer online at http://www.lpft.nhs.uk/.../lin.../young-people/self-referral

Alternatively, the Shout text messaging service is also available for those who are unable to call. People can text 'SHOUT' to 85258 to start a conversation, via text, with a trained volunteer, who will provide free and confidential support.

If someone is 16 or over and feeling stressed, anxious, low in mood or depressed, they can self-refer to Lincolnshire Talking Therapies service.

There are also lots of community resources available such as Night Light Cafes, community hubs and other groups and activities that may support people. People can search for their local area and what is available at https://www.haylincolnshire.co.uk/

"A candidate could have the world’s most impressive educational background, but if they’re unable to communicate their own potential, think creatively to solve problems, work effectively with colleagues or even turn up on time for meetings, they’re not the right fit.”

Worker Protection Bill. This new Act (an amendment of the Equality Act 2010) will be effective from 27 October 2024. A significant shift from ‘reactive’ to ‘proactive’ measures. The new Act places a duty upon employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace upfront, rather than just dealing with the consequences.

With legislation coming into force in October, Ruth Cornish explains the steps employers can take now
