As we move towards a new school year and with some of our Toddler Sense™ graduates starting school for the first time we are focusing on the importance of building social skills in the years before they enter the classroom.

By working on these skills through socialising with other toddlers it can make the transition and settling easler and smoother when the time comes to build friendships with other children.

TODDLER SENSE™ PLAY IDEAS
for Summer break and beyond

Play is an essential part of growing up. It helps toddlers find out about the world in which they live, and it builds essential learning and development skills. Play with an adult builds social and language skills and provides the emotional security that toddlers need for healthy development. The adult also provides activities which extend learning and ensures that the play is safe. Through play, toddlers learn language, social skills, personal awareness, creativity, problem-solving, and control of their body movements. We have some activity ideas that will meet the learning and developmental needs of toddlers and engage their interest.

Toddler Play - DID YOU KNOW?
"At some time in their second year, most babies take their first steps and become toddlers. The toddler period usually ends at age three and the child becomes a preschooler.
Through play, toddlers learn language, social skills, personal awareness, creativity, problem solving, and control of their body movements. If toddlers are given interesting toys and materials to play with and opportunities for movement and exercise, they will learn easily and quickly. Much of their play will revolve around an adult, who provides the tools and activities to support and extend their learning." - Dr. Lin Day from https://www.toddlersense.com/Toddlerplay

With national playday happening next week, we are reminded of the importance of play for children in their development.

The first part of a Toddler Sense™ session involves free-flow adventure play, which offers endless opportunities for exploration, problem-solving, and imaginative thinking. Toddlers are encouraged to crawl through tunnels, bounce, climb or clamber over the equipment. They also decide what interests them most and how they will explore the equipment which is great for busy little people who enjoy exploration and new challenges!

Toddlers & Social Skills

In their relentless drive to explore the world, toddlers gradually acquire social skills that enable them to get on successfully with other people. The development of social skills follows a set pattern, which is summarized here (swipe left).

Social development starts at birth and continues throughout childhood however there is a wide variation in the age at which toddlers acquire social skills.

If the toddler has not reached a milestone, it does not mean that there are any developmental problems.Toddlers of the same age may not have the same levels of social competence. Much will depend on their personality, temperament, ability, or additional needs.

SUMMER PLAY!

Sand and water play are great fun for your toddler and provide lots of great benefits for them.

Sand play provides a therapeutic tool for expressing thoughts, feelings, and constructive language. As toddlers explore wet and dry sand, make structures, and transfer it from one container to another, they learn about stability, texture, and quality. Sand play also encourages social relationships with other children as they play alongside them.

Water offers a wide range of learning opportunities for toddlers. Pouring water from one vessel to another develops hand-eye coordination and upper arm muscle strength (a litre of water weighs a kilo). To enrich vocabulary, use the words ‘full’ ‘empty’ and ‘liquid’. When water is poured into different vessels, the toddler will see the levels change, which increases their awareness of volume and capacity.
