Integrative counselling recognises that no two young people experience the world and its challenges in the same way. Rather than using a “one size fits all” approach, integrative therapy adapts to the individual, drawing from different therapeutic approaches to meet their changing needs. For some young people this may mean talking therapy or anxiety regulation work, while for others it may include cognitive approaches such as CBT.
Whatever approach is taken, it is grounded in having a safe and trusting relationship where they feel heard without judgement as feeling understood, accepted and emotionally safe can itself create the foundation for growth, confidence and positive change.

As I sat this morning taking notes over the phone for an initial referral, I noticed how the words someone uses to describe their challenges are truly indicative of the intensity of their distress they feel for the young person they are supporting. Seeking mental and emotional help for our children often exposes our own emotional processes, and I am always mindful that whilst they are calling to discuss their child's needs, I am also there to reassure the family and carers. Reaching out for counselling therapy translates the deeply personal words on my note pad to a source of hope for better days.

As a parent, I know what it's like to carry your children's worry and anxiety alongside them. Often we've tried hard to make sense of their struggles without a clear answer. They talk to us but we feel we are only getting half of the picture, or perhaps they are trying to shield us from hurt, minimising their difficulties when their need is much greater than they want us to know. Counselling therapy can be a safe space for teenagers to fully explore their emotional challenges without fear of judgment, or making family life harder. With time to talk through their feelings and what is really going on, insights can feel both relieving and empowering. This can lead to better communication at home as they find the words and confidence they need to express what matters most to them to feel better about life. Counselling with children and young people is as much about creating healing pathways within the family as the individual.

Both as a mum and a therapist, what I’m seeing more of is anxiety that looks like quietly avoiding life rather than dramatic outbursts. Teens internalising their anxiety can lead to social withdrawal from friends and family, again not total but partial, such as declining the odd party invite or spending less time at the dinner table and generally being quieter. Early conversations matter at these points, they are hoping someone will see them, how they really are. If after having those conversations, you are wondering if they need gentle confidential support feel free to contact me for a 30 minute free consultation. Offering the right support quickly can result in far fewer sessions to get back on track rather than waiting for a crisis.

Having had therapy myself as part of my training, I was often disheartened by the small spaces we were in that sometimes felt quite intense. I’m incredibly fortunate with my therapy room at home; comfy, spacious and with a lovely view of the garden so that silences are not awkward pauses where we don’t know where to look. Clients can stare out to the garden and just be for a minute, encouraging reflection and reducing interpretive pressure to talk when silence and slowing down is needed. If you are thinking about therapy you are welcome to take me up on my 30 minute free introductory session.

Welcome,
Over the years, working in schools, I’ve seen first hand the growing mental health struggles that many young people are facing. This experience inspired me to deepen my understanding and further my training. I’ve since completed an MSc in Counselling Therapies for Young People, and I’m now offering one-to-one therapy in private practice.
I’m passionate about providing a safe, supportive space where young people can feel heard and their feelings held to help them navigate life’s challenges.
If you know a family and young person in need of support I am here to help. Please feel free to get in touch. I offer a 30 minute free introductory meet up to chat about how counselling can help.
