It takes a great deal to shock me.
Over the years I’ve had the privilege of helping families deal with some of the most tragic deaths, and I’ve seen some of the most raw emotions. I’ve been able to take strength from being in a position to help when they’re at their most lost or uncertain. The thanks that my colleagues and I receive are always so genuine, and always mean so much. But yesterday, I was shocked.
I don’t like to talk about price comparisons of funerals. I won’t name other business to try and establish an advantage, as that isn’t the purpose of this message. I believe that individual businesses should have their own identity and have the freedom to charge a price for what they believe their services are worth. We all have our individual characteristics which make us unique, and we each add value to our services in our own way.
Today I sat with a family who were enquiring about prices, and I was more than happy to talk to them openly and without obligation about our services. We discussed what was included within our fees, and what might be an optional extra, as well as the third party costs.
After our conversation, it came to light that they had been in touch with a bigger regional funeral director before speaking to us. Their assumption was that an independent business such as ours would be more expensive.
I was shocked to learn that this other company had quoted this family nearly £1000 MORE for the exact same funeral. Everything was an extra, or hidden cost.
A standard coffin - not included in the price
Embalming - an extra cost
Chapel visits to see their loved ones - an extra cost per visit.
Collecting the ashes from the crematorium on behalf of the family - another extra!
I couldn’t believe the amount of extra charges - most of which, I was told, the family felt like they were being pushed towards having.
I respect everyone’s freedom to choose, and understand that some families have used certain companies for generations, just like many have been very loyal to Jary’s over the years. I just feel that I need to dispel some of these myths that big companies give better value. I know that we can offer a much more affordable, and higher quality, service to our community.
