EBCFPRS Newsletter December 2021

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The end of the year and the festive season is approaching. In light of the significant challenges that Covid brought about, I am particularly delighted to announce that a large group of excellent surgeons has just received their EBCFPRS Board Certification. On behalf of the EBCFPRS Board, I have the privilege to congratulate for their achievement:

Diego Arancibia Tagle Álvaro de Arriba Sánchez
Andre Generalow Dirk Dietz de Loos
Sebastián Moya Albiol Ingrid Kleiss
Bassel Hallak Floris Schalekamp
Mads H. S. Moxness Eline van Beelen
Stephen McDonald Mariola Popko Zagor

With the inclusion of these 12 colleagues, the community of European Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons has now surpassed 100 diplomates. The increasing number of diplomates and the recognition of the process continues to augment the significance of Board Certification. In concert with the corresponding American and International Certification Boards, the European Certification process represents the global benchmark in Facial Plastic Surgery.
Interest in the Certification process continues to be very robust.

We are pleased to announce the date for the upcoming EBCFPRS exam in 2022: The exam will be held on

July 9 and 10, 2022

at the Westminster Plaza Hotel in London, UK. Please see EBCFPRS.org for further information.

Please share this information with your younger colleagues and encourage them to pursue Certification by the European Board for Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
The certification process is open to colleagues who have been practicing facial plastic surgery for more than two years. These “regular track” applicants are required to submit their surgical experience over two years. An alternative track is offered to those surgeons in fellowship training. Detailed information is available on EBCFPRS.org.

The recent advances in the certification process would not have been possible without the contributions of a group of highly competent and dedicated individuals. Please allow me to recognize their contrubutions: Abel – Jan Tasman for overseeing finances, Julian Rowe – Jones and Santdeep Paun for their guidance on important Executive Board decisions, Haneen Sadick and Eduardo Morera for creating the database of Board – Certified Surgeons, Anil Joshi for certificate management, Dirk – Jan Menger, Özcan Cakmak and Frank Datema for overseeing credentialing. In addition, I would like to recognize Barbara Kofler, Benjamin Hunter, and Ullas Raghavan for serving as examiners for this year´s exam. Peter Adamson, Laurie Wirth, Lisa Novitsky and Missy Harp are instrumental in bringing the exam to Europe. All these individuals made the recently held 2021 exam possible, despite all the challenges.

On behalf of the Board Members, please accept my best wishes for a peaceful conclusion of the current year, a merry festive season and a successful and happy new year.
Yours very sincerely,

Holger G. Gassner, M.D.

Dear EBCFPRS Exam Candidates,
your EBCFPRS Board is very pleased to provide the following, updated information regarding the scheduling of your exam to you: After diligent review of all relevant developments, your EBCFPRS Board recommends that you proceed with your travel arrangements. While a residual risk remains that the exam is cancelled due to travel restrictions of essential personnel, the risk seems small and declining. Please note that, as stated in previous correspondence, EBCFPRS cannot assume liability for your cost in case the exam is canceled or postponed on short notice. Also, EBCFPRS advises you to review the current travel regulations, especially in regard to PCR test requirements. In order to participate in the exam, you must present proof of your complete immunization status with a vaccine approved for emergency use by the WHO.
Please follow the EBCFPRS Face Book page for updated information.

Dear EBCFPRS Examinees,

Your EBCFPRS exam is scheduled for October 23 and 24th in London. Your EBCFPRS Board has been monitoring the developments around Covid 19 and associated travel advisories. Please allow me to update you on the situation:
Currently, all conditions are met to allow staging the exam as planned. It is essential that the ABFPRS team can travel from the US in order to coordinate and manage all relevant proceedings. With the increasing Covid incidence in the US, there is a residual risk that travel from the US to the UK may be banned. The UK authorities will publish their next advisory on October 7th. EBCFPRS will await that advisory and will notify you, whether the exam will take place as scheduled. We remain optimistic that this will be the case. Please be advised to plan booking your travel and accommodation accordingly.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of your Board Members (CC), if we can help you with more information.

Yours very sincerely,

Holger G. Gassner
President

Dear Colleagues,
Please allow me to follow up on the most recent newsletter concerning your exam 2021. At the time your EBCFPRS Board announced the decision to postpone your exam to the weekend of August 21st.
This week, the UK government publicized that the date of June 21st foreseen to lift most pandemia – related restrictions of public life in the UK has been postponed. The reason is the growing incidence of delta – variant –related cases.
Your Board has been closely monitoring the situation and has assessed the chances of holding the exam as planned in August. The discussions have involved both the International Board for Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (IBCFPRS) and the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS).
The assessment has been such that there is a high likelihood of significant travel restrictions at the time of the foreseen exam weekend of August 21st. Despite the fact that the involved Boards are absorbed with an enormous amount of added responsibilities that have accumulated in the fourth quarter, exceptional provisions have been made to postpone your EBCFPRS exam to the fall of 2021. We are therefore grateful that we can provide you with a new exam date that will hopefully meet sufficiently unrestricted travel :
Your 2021 EBCFPRS exam has been rescheduled to October 23rd and 24th.
Please rest assured that your EBCFPRS Board has exhausted all possible scenarios to find the best available solution to stage the exam. These have included moving the exam to another European venue in August or holding the exam in September in the US. All these scenarios proved not feasible for important reasons. It is our sincere hope that we will be able to finally proceed in October in London.

As you know, we expect that regulations will require proof of complete Covid 19 vaccination from all candidates. In the event the exam has to be re-scheduled again, or if you are unable to travel due to pandemic – related restrictions, EBCFPRS will honour your registration fee and allow you to sit the exam at the next possible date. Please understand that possible loss of travel – related expenses remain your responsibility. A status report will be sent to you approximately 30 days prior to the exam. EBCFPRS recommends that you book your travels after that date and that you obtain travel insurance, if available.
Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of your Board Members (CC), if we can help you with more information.

Yours very sincerely,

Holger G. Gassner

Dear Colleagues,
Please allow me to follow up on the most recent newsletter concerning your exam 2021. As Board Members, we have all sat the exam ourselves, have completed the certification process, and we strongly empathize with your situation.
As you know, the London exam is embedded into an international system and is closely connected with the administration of the ABFPRS and IBCFPRS exams in Washington. This has limited the available dates to re-schedule the exam. As we have not been able to make a later date feasible, the exam has been firmly scheduled for August 21st and 22nd, 2021 in London.
The deadline for payment of your registration fee has been set for April 15th, 2021. We are optimistic that the exam can be held at that time. Please recognize that we expect regulations will require proof of complete Covid 19 vaccination from all candidates. In the event the exam has to be re-scheduled again, or if you are unable to travel due to pandemic – related restrictions, EBCFPRS will honour your registration fee and allow you to sit the exam at the next possible date. Please understand that possible loss of travel – related expenses remain your responsibility. EBCFPRS recommends that you obtain travel insurance, if available.
Some candidates have retrieved inaccurate information regarding the exam from alternate sources. Please be advised that all relevant information is listed on EBCFPRS.org and the EBCFPRS page. Please do not hesitate to contact myself or any of your Board Members (CC), if we can help you with more information.

EBCFPRS End of Year Newsletter 2020

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

2020 will be a year to remember. Without question, Covid has brought about many challenges for the European Board for Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery, our Board-Certified Surgeons, examinees and those who were withheld sitting their exam in London in July 2020. The decision to cancel the exam was made with a heavy heart and after multiple discussions among the Board Members. As former examinees and Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons, the Board Members understand the significance that a delay of certification holds and empathize with each affected candidate.
We also have positive aspects to report: With the growing number of EBCFPRS Board-Certified Surgeons among our community, the significance of Board Certification in Facial Plastic Surgery is continuously increasing. The examination process – regarded by and large among the most comprehensive globally – assures the highest level of knowledge by surgeons passing this important benchmark. The subsequent process of Certification involves submission and peer review of substantial surgical experience over a two-year period and further contributes to rising standards of surgical competency. Moreover, the political recognition of EBCFPRS Board Certification in Europe is increasing.
With the availability of promising vaccines, the prospect of resuming our previous routines is becoming increasingly real. Your Board and cooperating entities are continuously evaluating the situation and the chances of administering your exam in London in July 2021. At the current time, we are optimistic that the exam will go ahead as planned. Of course, your Board is also contemplating contingency plans in case adjustments are required.
Significant work is done by your Board to further enhance recognition of your Board Certification. This includes international and global efforts at harmonizing standards. A recently added milestone was the creation of common governing principles and eligibility requirements for ABFPRS, IBCFPRS, and EBCFPRS. Vito Quatela, President of IFFPSS and Peter Adamson, President of IBCFPRS, and the IBCFPRS administrative staff are gratefully recognized for their important contributions to this important development for the international community of certifying boards.
I feel honoured to work with a group of highly competent and dedicated individuals. Please allow me to express my gratitude for their great efforts: Abel – Jan Tasman for overseeing finances, Julian Rowe – Jones and Santdeep Paun for their guidance on important Executive Board decisions, Haneen Sadick and Eduardo Morera for creating the database of Board – Certified Surgeons, Anil Joshi for certificate management, Dirk – Jan Menger, Özcan Cakmak and Frank Datema for overseeing credentialing.
Today, more than 80 colleagues have been EBCFPRS Board-Certified. If you are not yet Board Certified, please consider joining the strong and growing group of European Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeons soon. As representatives of EBCFPRS, we are gladly available to facilitate the process for you. You can contact us through www.ebcfprs.org and our face book presence.
Thank you for your trust in our Board.

Our Mission

The European Board for Certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery was established in 2013. Its mission is to improve the quality of facial plastic surgery available to the public in Europe. The European Board is dedicated to measuring the qualifications of candidate surgeons against rigorous standards.

Among the core endeavors of the EBCFPRS is the administration of the European Board exam in facial plastic surgery. This is performed in collaboration with the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS.org). This exam has been developed over decades with substantial effort. Questions are field tested and selected only when they have been shown to accurately correlate with expert knowledge. The oral part of the exam is administered by senior examiners from Europe and the United States. A total of 12 case scenarios are presented to the examinees over a 3 hour period. The examiners are synchronized by senior board examniers. The expected answers and questions are discussed in a full day session, ensuring maximal fairness and reliability of the exam results. Both the written and the oral results are subject to rigorous quality control.

The exam forms only one part of the certification process. Candidates for both the regular and the fellow track are required to submit 100 relevant surgical cases over a 2 year period (50 per year). This surgical experience is reviewd by an expert board. Of course, all credentials of the surgeon including medical board and specialty board certification are reviewed during the process. Only when all requirements have been fullfilled, the successful candidate are provided with a certificate of "EBCFPRS Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon".
