Mental Health Awareness Week
10th May - 16th May
What does this mean to so many people that are suffering with mental health.
Unbelievably, the su***de rate has risen, not just alarming, but in a devastating way. 2020 the year of the pandemic, where the impact of mental health was so heightened. Unemployment rose dramatically, business failure, so many people unable to support their family, homelessness, feelings of no hope and being terrified of contracting the virus.
Some were extremely vulnerable to su***de. Su***de happens when a person is suffering quietly behind the scenes with stress, overwhelming emotions, or trauma with issues which way over and above the control of the individual.
Social media can play a major role in the thoughts of someone who is at an all time low with suicidal thoughts. Through these platforms, they will find information on self harming and su***de and be drawn into a dark journey of destruction.
My time spent as a volunteer for the remarkable Samaritans, was a most valuable and rewarding time. They are the only organisation to collate su***de data for the UK and the Republic of Ireland. You can download their annual Su***de Statistics Report.
