From Boardroom to Bedroom: How DHA supports Brain Health and Wellbeing for Busy Women

Toral Shah - Integrative Health is a leading nutritional scientist and says: "The human brain is made up of more than 50% fat. In a healthy brain up to 20% of that fat is Omega-3 DHA. Most importantly, DHA makes up more than 40% of all the Omega-3s in the brain's neuronal tissue, which facilitates conduction of electrical signals to the central nervous system.

"The importance of omega-3 DHA for brain health and
cognition are ever-evident. Omega-3 DHA is crucial for cell signalling and other tasks."

Yes, your eye health, the menopause and screen use may all be linked. Leading nutritional scientist and nutritional adviser to  Toral Shah, founder of says:

"As we age, changes to our vision are common due to genetics, natural deterioration, diet and lifestyle.

"These may include difficulty seeing up close, distinguishing colour, or transitioning between different light levels.

"As we approach and enter the menopause, our oestrogen levels decrease. This can affect both our vision and the physical aspects of our eyes. The shape of your eye may also alter, making contact lenses more uncomfortable and necessitating the need for corrective lenses to read properly. Staring at screens may not damage your eyes irreparably, but it can cause temporary issues and discomfort."

"Supplementing with Wiley’s Finest Bold Vision can support eye health and vision "

Kreena Patel Dhiman and I are the co-founders of South Asian Supernovas, an organisation set up improve Breast Cancer awareness and outcomes for South Asian people.

Sadly our community has poorer prognoses in breast cancer for a variety of reasons including lack of awareness, self-checking, screening ,representation and poor lifestyle. One of the fundamental issues is the absence of data around cancer for South Asian communities ; this means that we are often underserved and discriminated against when it comes to cancer care.

We are starting with 2 large research projects this month looking at different aspects of breast cancer awareness, diagnosis, care and attitudes. One of these projects will involve in person focus groups whilst the other will be an in-depth questionnaire to inform our further data collection.

The focus groups are scheduled for between 25th January and 5th February 2024 and will be held around London and the South East of England. Each focus group will last between 2.5 and 3 hours, and each group will have a maximum capacity of 15 participants. We are looking to recruit 50 breast cancer patients and 50 people who have not had a breast cancer or cancer diagnosis.

Selected participants will be compensated £100 for their time and emotional labour, along with being provided a nutritious meal.

The venues will be located in the following areas - we are awaiting confirmation from each venue before exact dates can be finalised for each area:

South London/ Croydon
Southall/ Uxbridge
East London/ Tower Hamlets
North London/ Wembley
Central London
Crawley

Please let us know if you are available between 25th January and 5th February 2024 and what area is most suitable for you. If you have other contacts who might be interested, please do share their contact details with us.

We are also looking for venues for Southall and Tower Hamlets/ East London should anyone have any suggestions.

Thank you

Toral Shah

Our nutritional expert, Toral Shah Founder of , says what she thinks are the big trends in health you'll see in 2024:

1. Personalised medicine – Genomic testing with is increasingly cheaper and accessible. Understanding how our DNA and genomes influence our health allows us to personalise medicine.

2. Sleep support and hygiene: sleep quality and quantity are decreasing globally, with few adults sleeping for 8 hours or more. As our understanding of Circadian rhythms increases, we can improve sleep hygiene and use technology, i.e., Oura ring, intelligent cooling and heating mattress covers, natural daylight clocks, and lamps.

3. Health tech wearables: As healthcare becomes more stretched, and health tech wearables become cheaper and available, patients can track their own data and then share with health care professionals providing an accurate picture of many aspects of health. E.g. Apple’s smart watch measures heart rhythms and can alert patients experiencing atrial fibrillation.

4. Eating and training with the female hormone cycle: female health has been classically under-researched, and we’re learning more about female bodies and our hormonal patterns. New research and data show that our body requires different nutrients at different times of our cycle.

5. Eating for mood and brain health: The field of nutritional psychiatry is growing, and what we eat impacts our mood and our brain health, i.e.. Mediterranean diet. The importance of such nutrients as omega-3 EPA and DHA is ever-evident."
