Anyone else feel like the day just flies by?

Between client sessions, admin tasks, and those unexpected curveballs, it’s easy to wonder where all the time goes.

The reality is, we’re always balancing a lot, and sometimes it can feel like there’s never enough time to get it all done.

But time management isn’t really about cramming more into our day; it’s about focusing on what truly matters. We’re here to support our clients, to make a difference in their lives. But in the midst of all that, we’ve got to find ways to keep everything running smoothly without burning ourselves out.

I’ve found that it’s helpful to take a step back every now and then and ask:
How am I spending my time?
Are the most important things getting the attention they deserve, or are they getting lost in the shuffle of never-ending paperwork?

Sometimes, just a small change can make a big difference.

Maybe it’s setting a specific time each day to knock out paperwork or finding a more efficient way to handle those admin tasks. It’s amazing how a little tweak here and there can free up more time to focus on what we love—working with our clients.

It’s easy to talk about self-care as well, but actually making it a priority? That’s another story. We often put it off, promising ourselves we’ll rest later, but “later” doesn’t always come. The truth is, taking care of ourselves isn’t just about getting through the day—it’s about being able to show up fully, both for ourselves and for our clients.

Burnout is real, and it can sneak up on us if we’re not careful. We might feel like we’re doing fine, but without regular self-care, the stress builds up. It’s not about grand gestures; it’s about those small, consistent actions—whether that’s taking a proper lunch break, going for a walk, or just having some quiet time to reset. These moments matter. They recharge us, keep us grounded, and ultimately, make us better at what we do.

So, how do you keep everything in balance? What small changes have made a big difference in your day?

Let’s face it—being an occupational therapist comes with its share of challenges. The emotional, mental, and physical demands of our work can be significant.

Whether it’s navigating tough cases, managing heavy workloads, or dealing with the emotional toll of caring for others, the pressure is real.

That’s why resilience is so important. It’s not about pretending the tough days don’t exist or brushing off stress like it’s nothing. Resilience is about recognising challenges, learning from them, and finding ways to keep moving forward, even when the going gets tough.

Building resilience starts with self-compassion. We’re often our own toughest critics, but constantly second-guessing ourselves isn’t productive. Instead, focus on what’s within your control and let go of what isn’t. Reflecting on both successes and challenges can provide valuable insights and help you stay grounded in what truly matters.

Connecting with colleagues is another key element. We’re all navigating similar challenges, and sharing experiences with peers can lighten the load. Sometimes, knowing that someone else understands exactly what you’re going through can make all the difference.

And let’s not forget the power of small victories. In the midst of a busy schedule, it’s easy to overlook the progress we’re making each day. Celebrating these small wins—whether it’s a patient’s progress or simply managing a particularly tough day—can uplift your spirits and reinforce your sense of purpose.

Resilience doesn’t mean never feeling stress or frustration; it’s about finding strategies to manage those feelings and continue delivering high-quality care.

Our work is demanding, but with resilience, we’re equipped to meet those challenges head-on and continue making a difference every day.

How do you cultivate resilience in your practice? What strategies have helped you cope with the challenges of being an OT?

5 Tips to Banish Imposter Syndrome and Shine as an OT

Feeling like a fraud even though you know deep down how amazing you are?

We’ve all been there!

Imposter syndrome can sneak up on the best of us, but it doesn’t have to hold you back.

Here are five practical tips to help you kick imposter syndrome to the curb and embrace your amazing self as an occupational therapist:

Laugh at Your Mistakes: Oops! Did you make a mistake? No biggie! Mistakes are just stepping stones to becoming even better. Laugh them off, learn from them, and keep moving forward with a smile.

Find Your Yoda: Everyone needs a mentor—someone wise and experienced who can guide you. Seek out a colleague who inspires you, and don’t be shy about asking for advice. Their insights can boost your confidence and help you grow.

Celebrate Like a Rockstar: You do incredible work every day! Take a moment to pat yourself on the back and celebrate your successes. Whether it’s a happy patient or a personal achievement, savor those victories and let them fuel your confidence.

Flip the Script on Negative Thoughts: Got a pesky negative thought? Flip it around! Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” tell yourself, “I’ve got this!” Positive self-talk can make a huge difference in how you feel about yourself and your abilities.

Treat Yourself Right: Taking care of yourself is key to feeling great. Make time for your favourite activities, get plenty of rest, and don’t forget to pamper yourself now and then. When you feel good, you’ll shine even brighter at work.

Remember, imposter syndrome is just a bump in the road.

It’s time to overcome those doubts and step into your role as a confident, capable, and kick-ass occupational therapist.
