⚡ Do you need to remove a bra to use a defibrillator (AED)?
AED pads must be placed directly on bare skin, but that doesn’t always mean a bra needs to be completely removed.
✔️ If the bra isn’t in the way, it can often simply be moved aside.
✔️ If it blocks pad placement, it may need to be removed or cut away quickly.
💡 What about underwired bras?
Studies suggest that metal underwires do not interfere with defibrillation or cause harm to the patient or rescuer. This means the bra often only needs to be adjusted so the pads can be placed correctly.
If breast tissue interferes with pad placement, the left pad can be placed vertically under the left armpit on the chest wall to help ensure an effective shock.
⏱️ The most important thing: don’t delay defibrillation.
This week we’re highlighting CPR and first aid in women and helping build the confidence people need to act in an emergency.
