The Greatham Foundation Dedicated to providing high quality care & housing services for older people. Makes grants to other charities that help people in need. Call 01429 870247.

The Greatham Foundation (previously known as the Hospital of God) was founded by Robert de Stichell, the Bishop of Durham in 1273. Our charity has a long and proud history of working with older people, those living with dementia and their family carers in the Hartlepool, North Tees and East Durham areas. Additionally, through our grants programme, we support a number of local charities and social enterprises across the North East. The charity works to develop and provide excellent person-centred care, support and housing services for people, particularly older people and those living with dementia. The Greatham Foundation now employs c100 people and its main charitable activities are:

Residential care for older people at Stichell House Residential Home, a purpose built 35 bed facility set in the beautifully landscaped grounds at Greatham

Day care and community support services for people living with dementia, and their families, delivered through our day centres, our community-based pastimes service and our family support services throughout Hartlepool and East Durham

Support information and advice through our dementia advisory service ‘The Bridge’ in Hartlepool

Supported living for older people in our Almshouses located in Greatham, Norton, Stockton and the wider North-East

The making of grants to voluntary and community sector and those not-for-profit organisations which make a difference to the lives of people in our communities

Congratulations to the Hartlepool Business Awards 2025 winners!

We’re absolutely delighted to see Hartlepool Meals on Wheels take home the Community Business of the Year Award.

Meals on Wheels do incredible work supporting people across our community — and we’re extra proud to say they’re based right here with us at The Heathers.

It’s a wonderful family business, and in the photo you can see Billy the Cook, whose delicious meals and big heart make such a difference every day.

A huge well done to the team for their dedication, kindness, and community spirit.

Our other services are unaffected and continue to operate as normal.

We’re working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will update you once everything is back up and running.

An update on the Greatham Marsh Restoration Project from the Environment Agency

Environment Agency contractors will be moving onto the Greatham Marsh Restoration Project site by the end of September.

This exciting project will see Greatham Beck returned to a more natural channel, new ponds created, and a restored intertidal creek system open to the tide by removing the tidal sluice structure near to the railway. The project expands and supports the internationally important wetlands of the Tees estuary while improving the area’s resilience to sea level rise.

The work will require the diversion of a public right of way that runs next to Greatham Beck, and notices detailing this will be posted on site in the coming week.

The first visible sign of work starting will be access improvements, fencing being installed and a compound set up, with plant and equipment accessing the site from Greatham Back Lane.

Details of the project can be found on Hartlepool Borough Council’s planning portal with reference H/2024/0149.

The works are expected to be finished by the end of April 2026.

An interactive chat-bot, hosted through HelloLamppost, can answer questions about the Greatham Marsh Restoration Project and the wider Tees Tidelands programme at the following link - https://api.hlpst.app/qr/agent/1453/?db=uk

Questions, thoughts, and concerns can also be shared with the Tees Tidelands team at teestidelands@environment-agency.gov.uk

A HUGE thank you to everyone who has been fundraising for our Community Pastimes Dementia Support Service!

🤩Dianne, who organises the 1 o’clock club held a fantastic raffle for a drinks hamper – kindly organised and donated by staff, their families and friends. Her efforts raised an amazing £173.00!

🤩Kari Fitness has also been dancing, moving and motivating her way to success – raising an incredible £626.00 through her fitness sessions.

Together, that’s nearly £800 raised to help us continue supporting people living with dementia and their families.

🙏 Thank you to everyone who took part, donated, or supported – your kindness makes such a difference.

The Greatham Foundation Launches Search for New CEO & Head of Finance to Lead Next Chapter

The Greatham Foundation has launched the search for a new Chief Executive Officer to lead the charity into its next chapter of growth, innovation, and social impact.

With a rich history dating back to 1273, The Greatham Foundation is one of the region’s oldest charitable organisations, delivering high-quality residential care, day services, dementia support and housing across the North East. The organisation is now seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to shape its future direction and build on its strong foundations.

The current Director (Chief Executive Officer), who has successfully led the organisation through a significant period of transformation and stabilisation over the past seven years, will be stepping down. At the same time, the Head of Finance will also be moving on after making a substantial contribution to strengthening the charity’s financial strategy and governance.

These changes mark a pivotal moment for The Greatham Foundation—offering exciting opportunities to appoint new leadership that will shape the next chapter of our journey. With a clear vision, a strong financial foundation, and a deep commitment to social impact, the Foundation is poised for continued growth and increased influence.

The recruitment process is being supported by Nigel Wright Group, following a competitive selection of agencies.

Margaret Bousfield, Chair of Trustees, commented:

“The Greatham Foundation is in a strong position, thanks to the dedication of our current leadership team. As we look ahead, we are seeking a values-led, forward-thinking Chief Executive Officer who can build on this legacy—someone who shares our values, and who will continue to drive the charity forward with vision and integrity.”
