👨‍🍳 Cloutie Dumpling Workshop Fun! 👵✨

Our residents had a fantastic time in the kitchen this week, rolling up their sleeves to make traditional cloutie dumpling during a hands-on workshop with our new Head Chef, Mark!

There was plenty of laughter, stories shared, and delicious smells filling the home as everyone got involved. Mark has already made such a lovely impression, and we’re excited for many more foodie activities to come.

A huge well done to all our resident bakers — we can’t wait to taste the final result! 🍽️💛

🌟 Meet the Team Monday 🌟
Say hello to Liz Gallacher – our wonderful Housekeeper!

Liz has been a valued part of the Balclutha Court family since 1999, when she first joined as a Domestic Assistant. Thanks to her dedication, hard work, and eye for detail, she was promoted to Housekeeper in 2008, a role she continues to excel in today.

Liz oversees the day-to-day running of our housekeeping department, managing a brilliant team of three laundry assistants and five domestic assistants. Her commitment ensures our home is always clean, comfortable, and welcoming for residents, families, and staff alike.

Outside of work, Liz is incredibly family-orientated. She loves spending time with her grown-up son, his wife, and her young grandchildren. When she gets a chance to unwind, she enjoys long walks, getting stuck into a good book, and heading abroad for a well-earned holiday. ✈️📚🌿

We’re so grateful for everything Liz brings to Balclutha Court — her warmth, experience, and dedication truly make a difference every day. 💛

🎉 More from Anne’s 80th Birthday Celebrations! 🎂

Yesterday we celebrated our wonderful Admin Assistant, Anne, turning 80 — and what a celebration it was! 🥳

The home was filled with laughter, smiles, and plenty of love as residents, staff, and friends came together to mark this very special milestone. Everyone was thrilled to celebrate with Anne, who means so much to every single one of us here at Balclutha Court. 💕

We enjoyed fizz, cake, nibbles, and good company, and as you can see from the photos, there was no shortage of joy! Anne spent the afternoon surrounded by people who truly adore her — and there were smiles all round.

Anne is such a big part of life at Balclutha Court — her warmth, cheerfulness, and kindness touch everyone she meets. It was lovely to see so many residents and colleagues come together to make her birthday one to remember. 🥂

This week at Balclutha Court, we were absolutely delighted to celebrate a truly special milestone — our much-loved Admin Assistant, Anne’s 80th birthday! 💐

Anne is such an important and cherished part of our Balclutha family. She has been a constant source of warmth, laughter, and kindness throughout her time here, and we were all so thrilled to make her day as special as she is.

We marked the occasion with fizz, cake, and plenty of nibbles, surrounded by friends, residents, and colleagues who were eager to celebrate with her. The atmosphere was full of joy and appreciation, with smiles all around as we shared stories, laughter, and heartfelt moments together.

Anne truly is the heart of Balclutha Court. She’s the friendly face that greets everyone, the calm voice on the phone, and the helping hand behind so much of what we do. 🌼 Meet the Team Monday 🌼

This week we’re shining a spotlight on our lovely Anne Foreman – Admin Assistant!

Anne has been part of the Balclutha Court family since 1992, and she’s one of those people everyone knows and loves to chat with. Always smiling and full of energy, Anne can answer the phone, balance the books, solve a staff problem, and have a full conversation with a resident — all at the same time!

Outside of work, Anne is a proud mum to two daughters and doting granny to four grandchildren who keep her busy. She loves shopping for unique jewellery, reading romance novels, and joining in with all our fun activities (especially when dressing up is involved!). In fact, she was even featured in the local paper recently dressed as a chicken — there’s nothing Anne won’t do to bring a smile to everyone’s face! 🐔💛

Residents, patients and colleagues got into the Halloween spirit of things by creating beautiful autumnal displays with painted and carved pumpkins, flowers and wreaths.

Many of our care homes and hospitals hosted fun-filled Halloween events with delicious treats, mocktails, live music entertainment, costume competitions and community celebrations.

Remember, Remember the 5th of November

That’s how the old rhyme starts. But what are we remembering - and why - on 5th November? Why are we still remembering it 420 years later? And why with bonfires and effigies (not always of Guy Fawkes)?

Join us on Wednesday, 5th November, at 2.30pm for a fascinating talk with Pippa Catterall, Professor of History and Policy at University of Westminster.

In this talk Pippa Catterall will explore the background to and events of that long-ago November night, why it was deemed so important to remember it then and how our memory of the Gunpowder Plot has shifted over the intervening years.

👻🎃 Bewitching Tricks and Spooky Treats 👻🎃

Springvale Court Care Home, in Wrekenton, , was a den of ghoulish activity as the home’s spooky Halloween Adams Family got into full swing.

Colleagues embraced the spirit of Halloween by dressing up as The Addams Family. Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, Wednesday, Uncle Fester, Cousin Itt and Lurch all visited Trinity Square in Gateshead town centre to hand out goodie bags for children and adults, and everyone had the opportunity to have their photo taken with the Addams Family.

General Manager, Gemma Rooney, shared: “Our staff love any excuse for fancy dress day! – we’ve all had a brilliant time.”

The team at Springvale Court commented: “It has been such a fun day. It was wonderful to see everyone go to so much effort to get into the Halloween spirit. And seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces’’.

🔍 Thursday Night Murder Club at Caldy Manor 🕵️‍♀️

It was an evening to remember at Caldy Manor Care Home on the as residents, colleagues and friends from Heswall & District Ladies Circle turned detectives, suspects and stars in the home’s very own Thursday Murder Club-themed evening.

Inspired by Richard Osman’s much-loved mystery novels, there were hilarious plot twists and some truly Oscar-worthy performances, the night was packed with laughs and fantastic acting from everyone involved.

A huge thank you to all, the experience was a roaring success.

Safe to say… no one saw the ending coming! 😉

🎃 Pumpkin Carving Chaos! 🎃

Things got spook-tacularly messy (and a bit stinky!) at Balclutha Court this week as our residents got stuck into some pumpkin carving fun! 😅🪓

There was plenty of laughter, a few funny faces at the smell, and some seriously creative designs — from spooky ghouls to cheeky grins, our pumpkins turned out brilliantly! 👻✨

It’s safe to say we had a gourd time celebrating Halloween together! 🎃🧡

🏅 Silver Success for Hugh Myddelton at Enfield in Bloom 2025 🌸

We’re happy to share that Hugh Myddelton House Care Home in won Silver in the Best Communal Gardens category at the Enfield in Bloom 2025.

The team proudly received their certificate from the Mayor of Enfield, Margaret Greer, at the Chickenshed Theatre – a joyful moment for everyone involved.

A big thank you to all who helped make the gardens so beautiful this year, especially volunteer Pat and Resident Ambassador Rosa.

Jade Shea, General Manager at the home, said: “Our garden is not just a beautiful space it’s a source of comfort, activity and pride for everyone here. This award belongs to our entire community who have worked so hard to make it flourish.”

The Enfield in Bloom competition, held annually, honours the best in gardening and environmental efforts across the borough.

🎉 Rose Water Place Supports Local Fishing Charity 🎉

Rose Water Place Care Home in recently presented Cast A Thought charity with a cheque for £1,260 in support of their Fish and Chat project, which promotes mental health and wellbeing through the therapeutic benefits of angling.

Cast A Thought CIC empowers children, young people and adults through accessible and inclusive fishing activities that encourage mental wellness and connection with nature.

Colleagues and residents welcomed Dave and Helen from Cast A Thought to a small gathering at the home to celebrate and hand over the cheque, awarded on behalf of Barchester's Charitable Foundation.

Hadrian Rodriguez, General Manager at Rose Water Place, shared: “We are always keen to show as much support as we can to local charities and Cast A Thought ensures that every cast of the line brings hope, healing and togetherness in the community.”
