We have been running teachers' led self practice sessions for while, with a focus on teachers working together on some of the more advanced poses. As developing a self practice is so important for everyone wanting to deepen their yoga practice, we are adding an early morning students led self practice session to our timetable.

We would like to invite you to attend a special Kathak dance performance at IYISL, created and performed by Vipul Bhatti - a long term yoga student at IYISL. Kathak is a beautiful and rhythmic North Indian classical dance. The performance is free but we will be making a voluntary collection for a local Deptford charity (the 999 Club) that works with people facing homelessness.

Starting this week - a new Wednesday early evening class with restorative poses and an introduction to Pranayama (yoga breathing). A really peaceful class for a mid-week boost.

Could you volunteer a little of your time to input to a research study on experiences of online yoga and well-being?

Online yoga was really important to all of us over the lockdown period so we are supporting a student doing a MSc in Psychological Studies at Brunel University doing research into online yoga and well being.

If you volunteer to input to the research you will be asked to do an online 45 minute one-to-one interview about your experiences, feelings, and thoughts about practicing yoga and your well-being.

Starting this Sunday (16 Jan) ... a new peaceful yoga class that is an ideal way to end your weekend restfully and prepare for the week ahead. Each hour long class will include some restorative (supported and restful) poses and an introduction to Pranayama (yoga breathing). The combination of quiet poses with Pranayama is restful for the body and calming for the mind.

In his book Light on Life BKS Iyengar said “By drawing our senses of perception inward, we are able to experience the control, silence, and quietness of the mind.”

Practising Pranayama is the first step towards this.

We are celebrating three birthdays in the next few weeks!

On Tuesday 7 Dec a yoga day to celebrate Geeta Iyengar's birthday introducing working with wall ropes (yoga Karunta) which Geeta loved.

On Tuesday 14 Dec a double celebration - a yoga day for BKS Iyengar's birthday inspired by his teaching and also our 26th birthday .... we were officially opened by BKS Iyengar on his birthday 26 years ago!

Both days are with Glemys Shepherd the teacher who established IYISL.

On the weekend of 9-10th October we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to learn from US teachers Mary Obendorfer and Eddy Marks, who have taught very popular workshops for us in the past.

They have invited students to join them in a hybrid workshop that they will teach live in their centre in San Diego as well as online.

Recently they have been exploring themes that help us deal with the stresses of recent times. The theme of this workshop is the ‘lightness of being’. Good yoga practice can create an incredible physical and mental buoyancy and lightness. What exactly are the qualities of practice which bring that wonderful lightness of being?

There are five sessions over the weekend including Pranayama and Asana. You can join individual sessions or book for the whole weekend. Four of the sessions can be joined live online and all are available as recordings for two weeks.

Aiming to explore diversity and inclusiveness in yoga - a theme which is central to our ethos at IYISL.
