My Recollection
I remember the terrace house we lived in when we moved to London. It had a cellar, and every floor creaked. The first floor had a front and back room, the bedrooms were upstairs, and the attic had two little beds. It was so different from the quiet village we’d left behind near the River Tees, life there had been peaceful, slow, and calm.
We moved because of my father’s work. He was a schoolteacher, and there weren’t enough pupils in our small village. In London, he had to take the Piccadilly line all the way from Acton to Southgate, about 24 stations each morning. He didn’t enjoy the commute, and truthfully, none of us really took to city life.
After four years, my father found a new teaching job in Grimsby, and I remember feeling so relieved to leave London behind. It was wonderful to be back somewhere quieter.
Now, I live surrounded by countryside and a lovely garden. I walk every day, sometimes twice. Living alone can be a bit lonely, but keeping busy helps. The weather feels strange lately, darker nights, grey skies, and even a tornado in Scotland! but I’m grateful to be where I am.
The countryside suits me. It’s peaceful, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
