Oxytocin or the love hormone.
We talk a lot about oxytocin in maternity care but what is it and what does it actually mean for you in your pregnancy journey ?
What is it?
Endogenous or 'naturally produced' oxytocin is a hormone produced in the brain and is associated with love, social bonding and is a key component of the transition to motherhood.
Why does it matter in maternity care?
Naturally produced oxytocin helps stimulate contractions, helps manage labour pain and supports bonding with the newborn and breastfeeding.
Will I just produce oxytocin?
Well yes oxytocin is produced outside of pregnancy from the brain and carried through the bloodstream. However in childbirth there are specific receptors that are activated in the uterus and breast tissue for milk ejection, by creating a calm, supportive environment oxytocin will be better utilized. If there is stress and anxiety present the body produces hormones like adrenaline which block oxytocin.
Key points
-The more oxytocin the better the contractions
-When the uterus contracts more oxytocin is produced- meaning more contractions--- leading to birth
-Oxytocin is greek for 'rapid birth'
- Synthetic oxytocin is used to induce labour
- Creating a safe, loving, protected environment combined with freedom of movement will help oxytocin do its job ❤️
