Dr Gillie Jenkinson is deep into Cohort 2 of the Certificate in the Walking Free Model 5-day UK Recovery Workshop with 7 wonderful therapists with lived experience. This is session 1 of 3 sessions and an opportunity to experience the Walking Free Recovery Workbook from 'the inside'. In 2026 the cohorts will merge and the participants will experience it from 'the outside' and learn about the evolution, theory and practice of the model. All trainees are therapists with lived experience of coercive, cultic and/or spiritual abuse. Gillie is grateful to Pauline Hewitt and Vicky Kalis for co-facilitating with her. It has been an intense but great few days!

After lots of preparation Dr Gillie is happy to say that the Certificate in the Walking Free Model 5-day UK Recovery Workshop has started today with cohort 1. Cohort 2 will take place in early November. There are 16 trainees in all (8 in each cohort). This is session 1 of 3 sessions and an opportunity to experience the Walking Free Recovery Workbook from 'the inside'. In 2026 the cohorts will merge and the participants will experience it from 'the outside' and learn about the evolution, theory and practice of the model. All trainees are therapists with lived experience of coercive, cultic and/or spiritual abuse. We had a great day!

CHECK OUT THIS AMAZING NEW DOCUMENTARY ABOUT A CULT BASED IN THE UK

Inside the Cult of the Jesus Army BBC2 27 July and 3 August 9pm and BBC iPlayer

Dr Gillie Jenkinson had the privilege of being filmed delivering Post-Cult Counselling in a Recovery Workshop for a documentary “Inside the Cult of the Jesus Army” with four amazing survivors. This was filmed at her house in the Hope Valley, UK by a wonderful team who have been very professional and supportive in every way throughout this process.

The two-part documentary includes a history of Jesus Army and archive material, interviews and the Recovery Workshop and is being screened on Sunday 27th July and 3rd August at 9pm on BBC 2 in UK. It will be on BBC iPlayer from 27th July.

There will also be a podcast (which Dr Jenkinson is not involved with) which will be very interesting as it will address legal issues around cults/coercive control amongst many other things.

Gillie is featured in this documentary ‘Inside the Jesus Army’ (alongside some amazing and very courageous former members) which is having its World Premiere at Sheffield DocFest on 21 June at 3pm at The Showroom Cinema in Sheffield, UK. This is what the website says: “In the 1970s, a group of idealistic Christians, led by firebrand preacher Noel Stanton, attempted to create a heaven on Earth in rural Northamptonshire. With testimony by former members, their children and community Elders, this compelling series traces the story of the Jesus Fellowship from its hippy origins to the high-profile launch of the Jesus Army in the late 1980s, followed by its shocking demise in the 2000s. In parallel to this history, a group of former members undergo specialist post-cult counselling to help them come to terms with their indoctrination. In this first episode, despite suspicious deaths and accusations of a cult forming, nothing seems to weaken Noel Stanton’s grip on the community.
