One of the realistic issues parents of neurodivergent children face is just getting them out of the house.

There are so many distractions in the home that can make leaving the house even harder than normal, gaming and tv screens being just a couple. Struggling with confidence, the thought of people watching you and loud noises make can make life tricky outside of the comfort and safety of one’s home environment.

What can we do to encourage our children to venture out? Sometimes fresh air and exercise just doesn’t cut it in the eyes of our ND kids.

Simple methods such as encouragement and praise can go long way, but, what if that’s not enough? what more can we do?

1) Small steps. Explain where your going. Ensure their safety.

2) Try and show pictures of where your going or describe the area. This will help build a picture in their mind and lessens any unwanted surprises.

3) Try and make it fun.

4) Make boundaries clear.

5) Know when enough is enough.

6) Allowing your child to be part of some decision making, giving them some form of responsibility.

n.b. I’m always proud of my kids constantly punching their own boundaries. as parents, my wife and i know it isn’t easy for them, but we are always amazed at their achievements.

Appreciation post. This is 15yr old Harry. Harry has ADHD and is one of the youngsters on my ADHD mentorship program. Harry was having some up’s and down’s at school but exercise has brought out the best of him. He’s also a keen sports man. Exercise and sport certainly keep him in a structured routine, which for someone that is neurodivergent can be difficult. We have a great understanding of each other and he always does his best to impress me with his work ethic.

Now summer holidays are here he does a bit of handy work with me in between coaching.

Harry works so hard when he’s with me, he’s intuitive, thinks for himself, always asks questions when in doubt and is self motivated.

The reason for this post? Nothing other than praise of someone that might find life hard sometimes. He’s an absolute credit to his parents and a pleasure to be around.

Procrastination.

The delaying or postponing of tasks, despite knowing there can be a negative consequence of not doing said task.

Those with impulse control, high levels of anxiety, ADHD and low self esteem are often the people who will procrastinate more.

How can we help remedy procrastination?

Prioritise a ‘things to do list’
Set time bound goals.
Tackle the hardest jobs first.
Find a time management app to help.

Another great opportunity had to tell people about the positive effect fitness has on ADHD, ASD and Mental Health.

This was a great chance for me to put forward my evidence based experiences on what exercise can offer.

Great Podcast today at ADHD Care . Thoroughly enjoyed myself and gave me the chance to explain my experiences to how exercise plays a vital and positive reaction on the ADHD brain and how it’s such a powerful tool for our reward release system.

The Brian reward system is to release dopamine, and us guys with ADHD have a dopamine deficit.

Exercise is by far one of the most valuable assets we have to help release dopamine. That’s why I have the best job in the world, I prescribe exercise.
