To Snack? And What to Snack?
I get asked a lot about healthy snack ideas, be it for shift workers, school lunch boxes, or for that afternoon pick-me-up when energy levels can drop.

So my latest article shares current research on snacking, when snacking may be beneficial, how to snack more healthily, and what snacks might be driving weight gain, a sweet tooth, and energy slumps after that initial hit.

I've included some recipe links, including my recipe for healthy, low sugar chocolate flapjack, which is a win with my active teens who are always hungry! It packs a nutritious punch, yet doesn't compromise on taste, and a little goes a long way!

Investing the time to rustle up a batch of these can lure you away from the vending machine, from products with empty calories that provide zero nourishment...

It was fantastic to join Leon Daniels OBE as a guest on his podcast Lunch with Leon to discuss a vitally important issue - nutrition and wellness for transport shift workers. It can be challenging to stay on top of a healthy diet as a shift worker, but by no means impossible! Do have a listen to find out more. Thanks for having me on Leon. Great to meet road safety contacts in person at The Home of The Rams, speaking at for the Association of Road Risk Management’s AGM.

I shared the stage with thought-provoking insights from Kate Walker, managing director of Diabetes Safety Organisation, with a focus on rising cases of type 2 diabetes amongst professional drivers - particularly HGV, bus and coach.

Alongside the nature of many hours spent sitting, there are the additional challenges of limited access to healthy food, and the decreased ability to digest it well if you need to eat at night.

But we both offer solutions with evidence-based research that both individuals and organisations can adopt to reduce risk and support staff.

Driver fitness and safety is a key consideration in reducing road risk, requiring a multi-pronged approach to address knowledge, culture, environment and embedded habits.

A former HGV driver suggested to me today that I look to engage truck stops, encouraging the provision of healthier food. So watch this space!

In the meantime, thank you Derby for a super whistle-stop visit, including the picturesque river, tea from the salad bar and this pitch-side view of the floodlit T20 at Derby County Cricket Club from my Travelodge window!

Type 2 diabetes can affect your ability to work, with concerns over having a ‘hypo’ incident, where your blood sugar drops along with your energy levels, as well as risks with eyesight quality and neuropathy in your feet.

Diet and activity levels can really help reduce your risk of type 2, but that can be challenging particularly with busy lives, sedentary jobs and shift work.
This week I’ll share some observations and suggestions on ways to reduce that risk, leaving you fitter to work well.

Did you get caught in the hailstorms today? A pleasant walk over Westminster Bridge turned me into a drowned rat, as I arrived at the House of Commons! Not quite the professional look I was hoping for!

Never mind, I was there to represent shift worker health and safety within the transport industry at a meeting with the Parliamentary Advisory Council on Transport Safety.

Shift-working drivers generally have limited access to healthy food, and are at greater risk of health conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and strokes.

A reliance on refined, processed and high sugar / salt, low fibre foods are the biggest issue.

As well as educating shift workers on these risks and on better choices, I want to raise this with employers of 24/7 transport organisations, and ask them to consider their workplace provisions, offering encouragement and solutions that will keep our professional drivers alert and healthy.

November is upon us, with many delicious foods ripe for the picking.
Why is it beneficial to eat seasonally?
Here’s four good reasons why:

1. Nutrient-Rich: Seasonal fruits and veggies are harvested at their peak, meaning they’re packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
2. Better Taste: Freshly picked seasonal produce tastes better – full of flavour and naturally ripe!
3. Eco-Friendly: Local, seasonal produce reduces the carbon footprint (fewer food miles) and supports local farmers.
4. Affordable: Foods in season tend to be more abundant, making them less expensive at markets.

DM me if you would like the full November seasonal produce info with recipes links, and each month's seasonal celebration thereafter!
