Yesterday I ran my fastest half marathon

Ok, it was only my second half marathon and that was 8 years ago!

I trained really hard for the first one, building up mileage.

I didn’t do much specific training for yesterday’s one and only signed up on the morning!

8 years ago I wasn’t in peri menopause, now I am!

So why do I think I ran it 16 minutes faster than last time?

A variety of reasons…..

1. My nutrition - including both my diet and supplementation is in line with my genetic code (ie, I support my methylation defects!)
2. I have really focused on my strength training in the last 8 years
3. I have started doing interval run training with run group. Cardio/HIIT/SIT is just as important as the strength

And did I run fasted? No, I definitely didn’t (although I didn’t last time either) but I have got it down to a ’T’ what works for me pre-run/endurance type stuff!

I thought I’d share this article from the times, unless you have super sonic eyesight I’m sure it is hard to read but essentially the headline is that eating breakfast later is linked to dying sooner!

What are your views on fasting?

The more I work with peri/menopausal clients & the more I research this, particularly for women who train/workout, the more negative my view is of fasting for this demographic. When we fast, it is an additional stressor on our body which we often don’t need, especially when we are so stressed out during the peri/menopausal period. Excess stress (cortisol) often leads to hormonal imbalances and the laying down of fat round the middle.

For men though - that is a completely different story and there is loads of research on the benefits (in fact, most research on fasting is based on men, not women)

I have recently used beetroot in my clinic with a lovely female client that had very, very high blood pressure.

This was a big worry for her and amongst an array of other dietary and supplementary changes, we introduced a glass of morning and night. The client had her own blood pressure monitor and every time she drank a glass, her blood pressure literally dropped immediately.

Have you thought about doing a genetic test to get the root cause of your hormone imbalances?

One of the hormones that is looked at is oestrogen. Oestrogen is talked about often in the context of HRT & perimenopause, fertility and cancer but what does it actually do?

Oestrogen is crucial for increasing cell growth and production. It regulates the female reproductive system and secondary s*x characteristics like breasts and p***c hair. It also maintains bone density, helps with blood clotting, and affects your skin, hair, mucous membranes, and pelvic muscles.

In my clinic, I am focusing much more on genetic testing as it is such a powerful way of getting to the root cause of health challenges and really fine tuning your nutrition.

Here is my summary for you:

Methylation is a process in your body where small molecules called methyl groups are used to control how your genes work.
Methylation happens in almost every chemical reaction in your body, occurring billions of times every second in your cells. It’s crucial for many important functions, including:

❤️ Heart Health - It helps remove a harmful substance called homocysteine, which can damage your arteries and increase inflammation.

🦠 Immune System - It helps renew white blood cells and balance your immune response, so it’s not too strong or too weak.

💥 Energy Production - It provides B vitamins (especially B12) to make energy for your cells, and supports mitochondria, the energy factories in cells.

☠️ Detoxification - It helps produce glutathione, a powerful antioxidant, and nitric oxide for good circulation.

🧠 Mental Health - It helps create neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin, and noradrenaline, which are important for motivation, happiness, mood, and creativity.
