Happy International Women’s Day!

In 2025 IWD is focusing on accelerating action for gender equality. When we look at our world we can easily see that significant barriers to gender equality remain. With support and the right action we can make positive progress for women everywhere.

Thank you for asking me to take part in your panel discussions on your educational day, with Menopause and aesthetics.

Detailed guidance about how we can manage women who go through their menopause under the age of 40 (and also taking into account those who have an early menopause between 40 and 45 years) is so important as the recommendations and discussion about benefits and risks are different from those we have with women who go through their menopause above the age of 45 years. It is so important to get this right to help protect the future health of women who go through their menopause early.

There are changes in the way this is diagnosed, so it is important to be aware of these.

If you are a woman and you have been having menstrual cycles and suddenly your cycles become irregular or stop for more than four months, please see your doctor to discuss why this could be happening to you.

If you take one of the GLP-1 agonists you must use effective contraception if there is a chance you could become pregnant. These medicines are not recommended in pregnancy.

If you are planning to become pregnant then you must check how long the recommended ‘washout period’ is (time before discontinuation of the medication and trying to become pregnant) for the type of medication you are taking. It could be up to 3 months, that you need to wait when you stop your weight loss medication before starting to try for a baby.

These medications can cause diarrhoea and vomiting so please be sure that you understand how to manage this as this may affect the effectiveness of your oral hormonal contraception .

If you take Tirzepatide (Mounjaro) then please read the advice about use of oral hormonal contraceptives when you start and when you increase the dose.

Weight loss can affect your periods, for some people this may affect the regularity of their cycle, but other people that periods can start to return with weight loss. Please be sure you were using effective contraception if you need this.

Today at Menopause in Aesthetics I was delighted to see and !

Dr Ginny Mansberg is the author of the M Word, an absolutely fabulous book all about menopause which I highly recommend.

Dr Mandy Leonhardt is the author of POI and Early Menopause and What Every Woman Needs to Know About her Skin and Hair both of which are packed full of incredible information for us.

Both of these amazing women are a fountain of knowledge when it comes to skin and Ginny has her own skin care products called which I will be trying now, to help with rosacea.

I really enjoyed speaking on the panel about menopause in young women with and Dr Nabil Elmahdawi. Thank you for inviting me.

Events such as this are so important for women’s health. I learnt a huge amount and made some absolutely wonderful connections.

Bones become more fragile as we age.

WHAT IS OSTEOPOROSIS?

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fragile and weak, leading to an increased risk of fractures (broken bones).

People with osteoporosis can experience a fracture even after a slight bump, or a fall from standing height, in the course of daily activities.
Osteoporosis has no signs or symptoms until a fracture occurs.

This is why it is often called a ‘silent disease’.

Fractures due to osteoporosis occur most commonly at sites such as the wrist, upper arm, pelvis, hip and spine, and can result in severe pain, significant disability and even death.

Exercise includes aerobic training, strength training, balance and pelvic floor. The whole body.

Thank you to all of you 🎄

Rowena Health is now nearly 2 years old and it has been a delight to see so many wonderful patients this year.

To every woman under our care, it has been a privilege that you have trusted us to help you with your symptoms and to help you decide what is best for you. Everyone who has made an appointment, who has talked openly, who has started the journey of education, and understanding their body better, has done so well. Each one entirely different.

Perimenopause and menopause care is a journey together, between the patient and her health professional. As my lovely patient, who saw me at the beginning of Rowena Health and who was last patient of the year, this year, has experienced. There have been ups and downs highs and lows, but with encouragement and support, and changing of treatment regimes and hormone doses and adding lifestyle changes and holistic talking therapies we have got there, to a place that was much better than before. I left that consultation with a warm feeling having watched a different woman talking with me, one who was excited about sharing Christmas with her family and whose symptoms were so much better controlled. Did it take time to get to this place together? Yes, it did. It was worth it.

One of my recommendations this week has been to use knitting in order to calm the brain.

This year it has become more apparent than ever that keeping your friends and family, close, supported and loved is probably one of the most important things we can do. Knitting will form part of that for Dr Rachael Chrystal and I as we support dear friends through a very difficult time.

Next year will be an exciting, with A levels and changing jobs for my family there will be new things to explore. A book to publish and an MSc to start, but most importantly to be present and to enjoy the moments.

Best of wishes to you all and those whom you love

Carys x

Lots of people are accessing medication now to help with weight loss, this is not coming through the GP, this is being accessed online privately.

Whilst we know these treatments can be really effective as part of a weight loss management plan, they can cause side effects and if those are diarrhoea and vomiting, which could be caused by Orlistat or laxatives or with the newer weight loss drugs then this could affect the absorption of the contraceptive pills, the combined pills, the progestogen pills and the emergency contraceptive pills.

It is important to let your doctor know what you take if they are not prescribing it. This is the case for any thing you buy over the counter including herbal medication and supplements.

This information from is so clear and a helpful summary about hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

Who is it suitable for?
What is it?
When should it be started, and stopped?
Why is it important?
What are the benefits and risks?
Where can you get it?

The women’s health concern fact sheets are helpful.

The international menopausal society has some videos for women which are helpful

Rock my menopause is a great website full of information for women

Menopause Matters is a great website

If your doctor needs support with education please direct them to the British Menopause Society toolkit for clinicians (and their new course) and to the Primary Care Women’s Health forum website where there are two courses for health professionals in menopause.

The have some incredible resources, their YouTube has interviews with experts talking about a variety of different topics including HRT, cognition, and testosterone, what we know from studies.

We need more research in order to understand more about women’s health.

Note: HRT is individualised. This week I have prescribed oral HRT, patches, gel, spray, fitted 52mg LNG IUD’s and given the oral contraceptive pill to manage women’s HRT for them according to their health, risk factors, age and need for contraception, and their personal preference for a product they can remember to take safely.

Compounded bioidentical hormones are not recommended.

Please see your GP if you are experiencing symptoms.
