A study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology explored how changing weekly training volume—either increasing it by 30–60% or keeping it the same—impacts muscle growth and strength in trained lifters. Over 8 weeks, researchers tracked hypertrophy, strength, and endurance across groups performing anywhere from ~12 to ~24 sets per muscle group per week.

What stood out wasn’t just that muscle growth plateaued—but that strength gains actually declined as volume increased. The group that kept their training volume steady not only built just as much muscle, but also achieved the greatest increase in one-rep max. This suggests that for trained individuals, piling on more volume can lead to diminishing returns—or worse, interfere with performance by tipping the balance toward fatigue over adaptation.

For experienced lifters, this research reinforces the power of strategic restraint. Once you’re training near failure with solid effort, more isn’t always better—it’s just more. Recovery, intensity, and smart programming often beat sheer volume.

A new study published in ‘Sports Orthopaedics and Traumatology’ explored how passive mechanical tension—specifically from long-duration static stretching—can stimulate muscle hypertrophy, even in the absence of active contractions. Researchers examined both cellular signalling and functional adaptations, revealing a surprising muscle-building potential hidden in something as simple as holding a stretch.

Beyond triggering key anabolic pathways like mTOR and satellite cell activation, the study noted that stretching at long muscle lengths could lead to sarcomere addition, a structural adaptation typically associated with loaded resistance training. These findings align with emerging research on blood flow restriction, emphasizing that mechanical tension—not movement—is the real growth signal. It’s a reminder that there are alternative ways to stimulate muscle gains, especially in rehab settings or deload phases.

This changes the game for anyone recovering from injury, managing joint stress, or looking to supplement traditional strength training. Strategic stretching isn’t just mobility work—it could be a direct pathway to building real, functional muscle.

A study published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research investigated how rest periods between sets affect muscle growth and strength in resistance-trained men. Over 8 weeks, participants followed identical training routines—but one group rested 1 minute between sets, while the other rested 3 minutes. The goal: find out how recovery time impacts hypertrophy and performance.

What makes this study stand out is how clearly it shows that rest isn’t wasted time—it’s growth time. Longer rests allowed lifters to maintain higher intensity and volume across all sets, which led to stronger anabolic signals like mechanical tension and fiber recruitment. It also challenges a long-held bodybuilding belief that short rests are “better for hypertrophy”—this data says otherwise, especially for large muscle groups and advanced lifters.

For lifters hitting plateaus, this could be a game-changer. Training hard is essential—but so is recovering hard between sets. Sometimes the smartest gains come from standing still.

A study published in ‘Biology of Sport’ compared two popular resistance training styles: high-volume, 3-set routines vs. low-volume, high-intensity training taken to failure. Over a 10-week period, researchers tracked strength gains, body composition, and subjective feedback to find out which method truly delivers.

What made the findings so compelling wasn’t just the performance edge of the one-set group—it was how drastically effort outweighed volume. The one-set group trained for less time, did fewer reps, but hit failure and used drop sets to push beyond it. That level of intensity activated deeper fatigue and likely recruited more muscle fibers. Meanwhile, the 3-set group often stopped based on perceived limits, leaving gains on the table. It suggests that how hard you train matters far more than how long you train.

For lifters stuck on the idea that more is always better, this flips the script. It’s not about piling on volume—it’s about pushing your limits with precision and intent.
