Meet the Optometrist: Steven Burge 👋

As part of our meet the team series, we're pleased to introduce Steven Burge, a registered optometrist with over 20 years of experience, bringing a wealth of knowledge to the team. Originally from Wales, he has spent most of his career in the Midlands, most recently at our Uttoxeter clinic where he developed his skills in YAG posterior capsulotomy.

Now, he’s excited to take on a new challenge across our Leicester and Nottingham clinics.

Based in Swadlincote, Steven is also a proud dad to his 14-year-old daughter and, when he’s not in clinic, you’ll likely find him scuba diving, especially exploring wrecks 🌊

✨ Did you know? Our Nottingham and Uttoxeter clinics now offer private treatments, including lens replacement, private cataract surgery, and pre- and post-operative care for laser eye procedures. Find out more at https://ow.ly/eGq250YVpA2

👁️May is Healthy Vision Month – a great reminder that caring for your eyes can be simple and small changes to your daily routine can make a big difference.

A balanced, colourful diet with leafy greens, oily fish, eggs, and nuts helps support healthy vision, while avoiding smoking reduces the risk of serious eye conditions.

Regular eye tests are just as important, helping to detect changes in your vision and overall health early, so aim to book one at least every two years.

Don’t forget everyday protection too. Wear CE or UKCA marked sunglasses to guard against UV rays, and reduce screen strain by following the 20-20-20 rule.

Taking care of your vision now can help protect it for the future.👏

Stress Awareness Month: what stress can do to your eyes 👁️

With busy routines, long workdays and increasingly screen-heavy lifestyles, we are feeling the effects of stress more than ever.

One thing that often goes unnoticed is how this can show up in our eyes. A common example is eye twitching (myokymia), something most people experience at some point, and while usually harmless, it can be a sign that the body is tired or under strain.

As Oliver Bowen-Thomas, Lead Optometrist at Optegra, explains:
"Many people are surprised to learn that stress can directly affect their eyes. One of the most common signs we see is eyelid twitching, often linked to tiredness, anxiety and excessive screen use."

We also see patients experiencing things like dry, strained or tired eyes during particularly stressful periods, often made worse by reduced blinking when we’re focused on screens.

Small changes can often help, like taking more regular breaks away from screens, making sure you’re getting enough sleep, and being mindful of overall fatigue levels.

During Stress Awareness Month, it’s a good reminder that looking after your wellbeing also means looking after their eyes. We are here to support patients with both everyday concerns and more complex eye conditions.
