👋Meet the Optometrist: Patrick Laidlaw

As part of our Meet the Team series, we’re continuing to introduce the talented professionals who care for our patients across Optegra, this week focusing on our optometrists.

Patrick Laidlaw, based at our Sheffield eye clinic, has worked in the optical industry since leaving school. Beginning his career as an optical assistant, Patrick progressed through a range of roles including practice manager and regional manager, gaining a deep understanding of every stage of the patient journey.

Driven by a passion for patient care, Patrick trained as a Dispensing Optician before going on to qualify as an optometrist through an accelerated programme with the University of Bradford. Today, he is also an Independent Prescriber (IP) and performs YAG procedures.

💬“I love to support individual patients and take daily satisfaction knowing that my core responsibility is the person sat in the chair next to me, helping them improve their vision and quality of life.”

Outside of the clinic, Patrick enjoys spending time with his family. A lifelong Manchester United fan, he also enjoys watching football and a game of darts with friends.

March is Workplace Eye Wellness Month, and at Optegra Eye Health Care we’re sharing tips to keep your eyes safe and healthy on the job, especially during long hours in front of screens.

✨ Set up your screen properly
Keep the top of your screen at roughly eye level, about an arm’s length away, and reduce glare from windows or bright lights.

⏳ Take regular breaks
Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Blink often and let your eyes reset.

👓 Wear the right glasses
If you’re experiencing blurred vision, headaches or tired eyes, book an eye test. If you use screens for work, your employer may contribute to the cost.

🦺 Protect your eyes in higher-risk roles
Working with tools, chemicals, dust or bright light? Always wear the goggles, visors or face shields provided, and make sure they fit properly.

💬 Speak up
If your eyes are regularly uncomfortable or your setup isn’t right, don’t ignore it. Small adjustments now can prevent bigger problems later.

Healthy eyes mean better focus, less fatigue and a safer workplace for everyone. What’s one change you could make today to be kinder to your eyes? 👇

How lens replacement surgery at Optegra changed the outlook for Cliff Parisi👁️👏

For over two decades, actor Cliff Parisi (renowned for his roles in Call the Midwife and EastEnders) viewed the world through a thick set of frames. When Cliff’s short-sightedness became so debilitating that even his character, Fred Buckle, had to adopt glasses, he realised he needed to do something about his vision. We recently welcomed Cliff to Optegra Eye Hospital Central London, where he underwent a life-changing procedure to reclaim his vision and his career.

Cliff reports: “I’ve enjoyed a newfound independence where I’m no longer worried about forgetting my glasses when I’m leaving the house, or about my frames falling off when I play with my kids. It’s been life-changing.”

“I was bullied at school because of my glasses and never felt confident in them… but now eye surgery has restored my confidence.” ✨

Optegra patient Dominique Highfield, had worn glasses since she was six and had a very high prescription of -10. After being told years ago that she wasn’t suitable for laser eye surgery, she assumed she’d always rely on thick lenses and daily contact wear.

But thanks to Implantable Contact Lens (ICL) surgery at Optegra Eye Hospital Birmingham, she’s now free from glasses and contacts for good.

ICL surgery involves placing a tiny, soft lens inside the eye, offering a life-changing solution for people who may not be suitable for laser eye surgery. For Dominique, it’s meant more confidence at work, more spontaneity with friends, and the simple joy of seeing clearly the moment she wakes up.

“I am amazed to look back and see how restricted I felt… It’s such a liberating feeling to lose that dependency.”

Ophthalmologists from Optegra reveal why snow is one of the toughest visual challenges in the Winter Olympics, even in cloudy weather ❄️👀

Amir Hamid, Chief Medical Officer and Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Optegra, said: "Snow doesn’t just reflect light, it floods the visual system with it.

"Fresh snow can reflect up to 90 per cent of UV radiation, creating extreme brightness and glare.

"This overwhelms the retina (the back of the eye), reduces contrast and makes it much harder for the brain to judge shape, distance and texture."
