Professor Mark Whiteley’s new book is now available.
“Why Varicose Veins Come Back – and How to Stop Them” explains why varicose veins often return and what the most effective treatments are today.
One of the chapters, “Red Flags,” highlights the warning signs that patients should be aware of when choosing which doctor or clinic to trust. It explains why they should trust some and when it may be best to walk away from a treatment.
If you’d like to learn more, the book is now available on Amazon.

Pelvic pain after pregnancy is often put down to childbirth, hormones or recovery.
It is not uncommon for women who have had difficult deliveries, including ventouse, caesarean section or episiotomy, to experience ongoing pelvic discomfort. However, that heaviness, dull ache or dragging sensation may not always be related to the birth itself.
In some cases, these symptoms can be caused by pelvic congestion syndrome, a condition linked to pelvic vein reflux that is frequently overlooked.
If you are experiencing persistent pelvic pain after pregnancy and feel it has never been properly explained, a specialist pelvic vein ultrasound can provide clarity.

Lots of patients ask what a pelvic vein scan actually involves.
At The Whiteley Clinic, a pelvic scan is carefully structured in three parts. It begins with an abdominal scan looking at the ovarian and internal iliac veins. This is followed by a transvaginal scan, which patients generally find comfortable, as the probe does not need to go deeply into the pelvis. The final part looks at any connections between the pelvic veins and the legs.
Together, these elements allow us to build a detailed diagram showing the exact pattern of reflux for each individual patient. This information guides our radiologists and surgeons in planning the most appropriate treatment.
If you have been told your pelvic pain is unexplained, a specialist pelvic vein scan may provide the clarity you have been looking for.

🫄🏻Planning a pregnancy and wondering whether pelvic vein embolisation could affect it?
There is no evidence that pelvic vein embolisation reduces fertility. There is also no evidence to suggest an increased risk of complications during pregnancy or labour following the procedure✨
If you have had pelvic vein embolisation and later become pregnant, it is simply important to inform your obstetrician as part of your routine medical history.
If you would like personalised advice about pelvic congestion syndrome and future pregnancy, our team is here to guide you😊

Can varicose veins be treated during pregnancy?
A frequently asked question we hear from many women 🤰
In most cases, it is not advisable to treat varicose veins during pregnancy. At The Whiteley Clinic, treatments such as foam sclerotherapy are avoided at this time. Only in very rare and specific situations would any intervention be considered, and this would be under local anaesthetic.
For the majority of women, the safest approach is conservative management during pregnancy, followed by a full assessment after childbirth and once breastfeeding has finished. This allows us to plan treatment properly and safely.
If you have concerns about your veins during pregnancy or would like advice after having your baby, our team is here to guide you 👩⚕️

Stage Three completes the Whiteley Protocol.
This final stage focuses on follow up, refinement and long term results, making sure any remaining veins are treated properly and recovery is progressing as expected.
It builds on the foundations set in Stage One and Stage Two, where the underlying causes are identified and treated first.
Following the full pathway is how we reduce recurrence and achieve lasting outcomes, not just short term improvement.

The Whiteley Clinic are private medical facilities specialising in the treatment and research of varicose veins and other venous conditions, like thread veins, leg ulcers and phlebitis.
Our own continued research, audited results, inventions and new technologies used in varicose veins treatment have led to the development of The Whiteley Protocol®, a standard of excellence for the diagnosis and treatment of varicose veins.
We introduced the minimally invasive, or ‘pin-hole’, surgery techniques to the UK by performing the first such procedure in March 1999.
We invented TRLOP technique for closing perforating veins in 2001 and have been the leading clinic in diagnosing and treating pelvic and vulval varicose veins.
We have continued to stay at the forefront of this revolution and have both a national and international reputation for our work and innovation. We have now performed over 20,000 minimally invasive or ‘Keyhole’ procedures using EVLA (Laser), Radiofrequency (RFiTT®), Ultrasound Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (USGF), Transluminal Occlusion of Perforating veins (TRLOP) and Ambulatory Phlebectomy.
We also treat spider veins with Microsclerotherapy.
