Birtley House Nursing Home

Birtley House Nursing Home Birtley House is family-owned and family-run. The family endeavours to ensure that residents feel they have merely ‘moved home’ and not moved ‘into a home’.

A family-run nursing home for over 90 years, the ethos within Birtley House is on the care of the whole person including their social, holistic, and general wellbeing needs, not just their medical needs. The Whalley family are dedicated to providing the highest levels of care and quality of life for all our residents. Birtley House offers full nursing care, respite care, rehabilitation and end-of-life care services. For those who are not ready for care but would benefit from daily support to live independently, we have supported living flats on-site (Birtley Mews), which are spacious and have exceptional views out to the countryside. Caring for the whole person is a vital part of the ethos of life at Birtley House: we have active links with the local community, an imaginative activities programme, and a supportive pastoral team comprising a chaplain, counsellor, companions, and wellbeing mentors

This week, our residents were delighted by two little visitors - hedgehog brothers, Harry and Henry!

Just turning 10 months old, they are under the care of Graham, who currently rescues and rehabilitates 18 hedgehogs before releasing them back into the wild.

Sadly, the UK's beloved spiky mammal is facing serious decline, and we are incredibly grateful for the important work that Graham does to care for them. Thank you for sharing their wonderful personalities with us!

At Birtley House we are very proud of our 'person centred approach' ensuring every resident is treated as an individual and encouraged to make their own daily informed choices.

One example of this is the use of large visual flash cards displaying the choices for the afternoon's activities such as piano recital, Holy Communion, or film.

Helping those individuals who struggle with communication point to what they would like to do and encourage attendance for their stimulation and enjoyment.

Simple, effective and rewarding.

Last week, we celebrated a beloved tradition at Birtley House Nursing Home, our annual Strawberry Afternoon Tea!

What a delightful day it was and always a highlight of the social calendar.

Residents enjoyed a delectable afternoon filled with laughter, friendship and of course fresh strawberries and cream!

We love creating these memorable moments together.

Due to the unexpected heat wave, we moved our gathering from the Rose Garden to the charming Mews Courtyard which could provide more shade.

There is something special about connecting with nature and our residents have embraced this with open arms and green thumbs.

Getting their hands dirty in the soil, it was a joy to see them engage with the gardening. Research has shown that planting can reduce stress, enhance mood, and even improve cognitive function, which we have witnessed firsthand as it has uplifted spirits and encouraged social interaction among our residents.

Planting plants for around the courtyard and tomatoes and strawberries for the kitchen garden, we look forward to watching them bloom and grown with a sense of accomplishment and ownership and are hoping to enjoy tasting the produce at the next Tom's garden club!
