✨ 24 hours of silence… complete! ✨

Thank you SO much to everyone who sponsored me for my sponsored silence in support of 💙

I stayed silent for a full day to raise awareness of children with speech and language needs- especially those who rely on alternative ways to communicate. I used the ClaroCom app (free + easy to use!), but even with that, it was a challenge.

🧠 It really made me reflect on how much patience, resilience, and support is needed for those who communicate differently- and how important it is to create inclusive spaces where all voices are heard, however they’re expressed.

Your donations and support mean the world- thank you! 🙏💬💙

So, having a CONSCIOUS Quality Interaction means you’re aware of what you’re doing. You’re doing it deliberately and you know why. You’re doing it to support your child’s communication development. You can be mindful, enjoy the moment and RESPOND to your child.

You’re not committing to doing this all the time. But knowing you’ve had a Conscious Quality Interaction today can make you feel good. And reassured that you’re doing what you can. And maybe just ease that ‘Mum (or Dad) Guilt’ a little bit.

A day with little ones can be FULL ON. So many things to juggle, so many meals to make...

When was the last time you consciously engaged in QUALITY interaction with your child(ren)?

Research shows that rather than the AMOUNT of time you spend talking to children it’s the QUALITY of the interaction that is really important, that good quality interactions can accelerate children’s communication development...

THIS DOES NOT MEAN:
❎ children with with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) have had poor quality interactions
OR
❎ that if you’re concerned about your child you are in any way to blame. Absolutely not.
OR
❎ that having conscious quality interactions with your child will resolve all your concerns

BUT, it does mean:
✅ YOU can HELP support your child’s communication development (in all areas of ‘The Communication Pyramid’)

Having conscious quality interactions with your child:
💖 Helps you mindfully enjoy interacting with your child
💖 Supports you to feel empowered- knowing that you’re supporting your child’s communication development and understanding how
💖 Encourages your child to participate in social interactions now and in the future
💖 Supports your child to engage in activities for longer
💖 Boosts their vocabulary development
💖 Helps with pronunciation development

Obviously QUALITY can be quite a subjective term, but luckily I’m here to help unpick the research about the things that make the most difference to children’s communication development...

My 9th most popular podcast episode… Episode 6: Using Routines to Support Speech and Language Development

We have loads of routines in our family- the usuals include getting dressed, having a bath and meal times. My kids also love repetitive games like singing and playing hide and seek. The kids current favourite is a game called “Go find me…”- we take it in turns to sit on a special chair and give orders to the rest of the family!

What routines (activities that are done in a repetitive, familiar way each time) do you have in your home?

Oh hi there... 👋 Just a brief introduction for anyone who is new here. My name is Charlotte and I’m a Speech (and Language) Therapist. I graduated from Newcastle University in 2007 and have worked in the profession ever since. I worked in a London NHS for more than 14 years and have spent the last 3 years working independently with families and schools in London, Surrey and Hampshire. I spend much of my time delivering training and working in a Multidisciplinary Autism Diagnostic Service. I’m married to Tristan and we have two children- Archie & Evie. They have just turned 8 & 6 (there’s 3 days between their birthdays). I feel lucky that my career and my role as a parent are so complementary- I often learn things at work that I bring home and I definitely think I’m a better Speech Therapist since becoming a Mum. What else would you like to know about me? Please leave a comment or send me a message and I’ll get back to you!
