Spent a lovely morning last Wednesday chatting to and listening to birth stories from a beautiful bunch of new mummas. Collecting feedback from service users is an essential part of making our maternity services better. Get in touch if you would like to share your story and be part of The Royal Surrey County Hospital MNVP

๐Ÿ™A huge thank you to everyone who joined our Stay & Play at โ€™s The Hive last week to share their feedback about their maternity experience at the Royal Surrey.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธBy sharing your experiences at events like these you are helping to shape the future of local maternity and neonatal care and improve the experience for everyone.

โœ๏ธAll the feedback will be passed onto the senior midwives and doctors at the hospital, and we will work, together with the Patient Experience Midwife, to consider improvements that can be made to care in the future.

โ„น๏ธSome of the topics discussed included maternal mental health, neonatal care, infant feeding support, gender neutral and inclusive care, and induction of labour.

โค๏ธA special thank you to our volunteers and who joined to listen to the experience of other families on behalf of the MNVP and share their own feedback. We were also lucky to have our Patient Experience Midwife Claire and Postnatal & Community Matron Tanya there to speak to families and answer any questions ๐Ÿ™

๐Ÿ“†Our next Stay & Play listening event will be held at the Waverley Family Centre in Hale on the 9th October. Details to follow soon.

๐Ÿ“งIf you were unable to make the event last week and want to provide feedback on your experience of maternity or neonatal care at the Royal Surrey, please get in touch via rsch.mnvp@gmail.com or complete our maternity survey (link in the bio). We would love to hear from you ๐Ÿ™‚

A bit different post today, but it's a little story.. When I was little, my dream job was to have a flower shop by the block of flats where my nan lived in Helsinki. I loved flowers and my mum has plenty of stories of me picking the neighbours' tulips or flowers from the hotels flower beds on holiday ๐Ÿคญ Anyway time went on and my dream job changed plenty of times. And I also developed a skill of killing every single plant that I ever owned. Like all of them. Even the succulents. RIP. Not a very desirable skill for a florist ๐Ÿคช and I kinda gave up on the idea ever having lots of flowers/ plants in my home and resorted to good old plastic plants ๐Ÿ˜

Anyway, 2 years ago, I had my 1st ever twin client and she had (in my eyes) an amazing collection of plants in her home. I couldn't believe how she managed to keep all the plants alive and be the most incredible mumma to her twins. I always admired her plants and she then gave me some tips on how to keep plants alive. And when it came time to say goodbyes to this gorgeous family, they gave me 2 cuttings of Devil's Ivy and instructions on how to look after them. And here they are (pics 1 and 2). My plants babies. Grown from the cuttings they gave me. My twins if you like. And now my plants collection is ever growing, so much so I now need to sneak new plants in my house without my husband noticing ๐Ÿ˜†

So in so many ways, this twin client, doulaed me! And here I am for all the plant chat, my DMs are open ๐Ÿ˜†

NIGHT DOULA- What does a night doula do? How can I help? Why would you hire me to support you overnight?

As a night doula my aim is to simply be an extension of you. We all know how babies like to be held, particularly at night. It's their natural instinct to wake up when you try and lay them down on their back. So I'm there to do the holding. So that you can rest. Whether you're breastfeeding or bottle feeding, I can support with both. If breastfeeding, I'll keep you company whilst you feed, bring you snacks/ drinks, and once baby has been fed, I'll have baby in my sling or otherwise hold them so you can have a rest. If bottle feeding, I can take care of the overnight feeds, or keep you company if you would rather feed your baby yourself. I can help with washing and sterilising bottles, do all baby care like nappy changes, do quiet household chores like folding laundry etc... So you can wake up feeling refreshed and knowing that there's a few less things to take care of. But the main thing is, I will always work around your and your family's needs. No forced routines, no particular agenda. Just you and your baby. And my support from 8pm until 6am.

I'm running a special offer for summer nights, just to help you through these hot and long nights;

3 nights for price of 2
OR
6 nights for price of 4
9 nights for price of 6 and so on.. So for every 2 nights, you get an extra night for free!

Normal price ยฃ250 per night

Lots of love and sweet dreams, Sara Knowles Doula

As we come to the end of the Maternal Mental Health Week, there's something I really wanted to write about. And that is toxic positivity. Time and time again I hear my clients tell me about their experiences of how their feelings or experiences have been dismissed or belittled.

"Oh cheer up."
"Just stop worrying about it."
"Oh it could have been a lot worse."
"Well at least the baby is well."
"Oh stop being silly."

I could go on and on. When has such comment ever been helpful? Quite the opposite. You are not silly. You don't need to cheer up. It's not just about the baby. What you need to do is feel. Sit in that hard. Express your worries and be met with empathy. Motherhood is a wild ride and we don't have to enjoy every moment. You can love your baby and still find parts of motherhood hard. Two opposite feelings can exist at the same time.

This is your experience and whatever has happened and how it has impacted you, is yours to hold. Whether it left its mark on you. How it made you feel. Your feelings matter. I will not tell you to just move on and forget. The way we are treated at the time we become mothers, stays with us for the rest of our lives. It impacts on how we see ourselves, how we mother. Becoming a mother is life changing. Let's not act like it isn't.

Toxic positivity has no room in my doula bag. Because you matter. Your feelings matter. Your experience matters. Your hopes and wishes matter. And just because your experience/ hopes/ feelings are different to someone else's, it doesn't make them any less important. You matter โ™ฅ๏ธ

Sending love xx

โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ - My heart is so full after receiving such wonderful feedback from a client I've just said my goodbyes to after supporting them for the past 4 months as they welcomed their 1st baby. We met a couple of times before baby was born and discussed the postnatal period in every perspective in length. And wow haven't these brand new parents really flourished. It wasn't always easy, but with the right kind of support, they've had the most wonderful start to their parenting journey. Forever grateful to have been part of that journey โค๏ธ
