British Society of Lifestyle Medicine

British Society of Lifestyle Medicine Preventing, treating, managing and reversing chronic disease using evidence-based lifestyle medicine. Visit www.bslm.org.uk for more information.

Imagine a world free from an ever increasing burden of disease related to living an

unhealthy lifestyle; a world free from disease which is currently suppressing the wellbeing

of individuals, straining society healthcare systems and driving inequality. The current

management of lifestyle-related diseases is dominated by the use of pharmaceuticals, but

this approach does not tackle the root cau

ses of such diseases. The British Society of

Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) believes that using Lifestyle as Medicine is a more effective

and sustainable way of managing illness. Lifestyle Medicine is not only simple and cost-effective, it empowers individuals to take

their health into their own hands. BSLM is building a multidisciplinary network of

healthcare professionals who believe in re-energising the healthcare system and

reframing it away from disease towards health. We are a group who want to collaborate

by sharing our knowledge of using Lifestyle as Medicine to build a reliable, evidence-
informed resource which can help you and your patients to lead healthier lifestyles. BSLM

warmly invites you to join an energetic, resourceful and creative society and to be part of

a global alliance for sustainable healthy change. Let’s turn the tide of disease for the

greater good of our patients, our communities, ourselves and our planet.

On Tuesday we looked at the current healthcare landscape and the growing need for a different approach to chronic disease. Today we are turning to the question of where lifestyle medicine fits in 💬

Hear from Dr Frances Elliot, Prof Sir Muir Gray, and Dr Rupa Joshi as they reflect on some of the most pressing issues facing healthcare professionals right now. Clinician burnout and the importance of looking after yourself as well as your patients. The growing role of community-based care. And the need to address the social determinants of health as part of routine clinical practice.

These are exactly the issues lifestyle medicine is designed to address. At BSLM our approach is built on three principles: addressing the socioeconomic determinants of health, using evidence-based behaviour change skills, and applying the six pillars as a whole-person framework. Together they offer a practical and clinically grounded response to the challenges our healthcare community is facing today 👏

Has lifestyle medicine made a difference in your practice or for your patients? We would love to hear from you in the comments.

Our Nutritional Psychiatry Food & Mood Masterclass has just become even more exciting 📣

Distinguished Professor Felice Jacka, our headline speaker, has just been named the 2026 L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Laureate for Asia and the Pacific, one of the world’s most prestigious scientific honours, selected from a record 504 nominations across 89 countries 👏

This recognition reflects the scale and influence of her work shaping how we understand diet, mental health and the gut brain axis.

With the masterclass taking place next week in Edinburgh, this is your final chance to be in the room for a full day of cutting edge science translated into real clinical practice, alongside leading researchers and clinicians driving the field forward 📚

Alongside the academic programme, the day also includes the option of a complimentary Edinburgh Hidden Gems walking tour with Invisible Cities, offering a chance to experience the city in a different way once the sessions conclude.

If you work in healthcare or are interested in how diet and lifestyle are reshaping mental health care, this is not a session to miss!

If you cannot attend live, your ticket also includes access to the full recording on demand.

To open Lifestyle Medicine Week 2026, we are starting with the big question: why is lifestyle medicine needed now more than ever? 💭

Hear from Dr Rob Lawson and Dr Frances Elliot on the scale of the non-communicable disease burden, clinician burnout , and how the Covid pandemic has reinforced the need for a prevention-focused approach to care.

Why do you think lifestyle medicine is needed right now? We would love to hear from you in the comments 💬

Stay tuned for our next post on Thursday, where we look at how lifestyle medicine addresses these issues.

Hear from Medical Defense Society on why indemnity needs to evolve with lifestyle medicine🤝

Most providers step into new areas very slowly.

We didn’t.

We confidently moved forward.

Because lifestyle medicine isn’t in the margins anymore. It’s how many GPs are choosing to practise.

And indemnity should move with you.

Not hold you back.
Not question your scope.
Not force you into someone else’s definition of “standard”.

We built cover around how you actually work today and where you’re going next.

Welcome to Lifestyle Medicine Week 2026 🎉

To kick off the week we wanted to start with the basics. Lifestyle medicine is built around six pillars: Healthy eating, physical activity, sleep, mental wellbeing, social connection, and avoiding harmful substances. Each is supported by strong evidence and has the greatest impact when addressed together as part of a whole-person approach.

It acknowledges the need for action on socio-economic determinants of health, provides education around the 6 key pillars as well proven techniques to sustain lifestyle changes.

Throughout the week we will be sharing insights on why lifestyle medicine is needed, how it is making a difference, and where it is heading next 💭

Whether you are already working in lifestyle medicine or have just discovered it for the first time, there is something for you this week. Follow along and join the conversation!

Every step counts this National Walking Month 🚶‍♂️

In this month’s update for our Let’s Walk More campaign, Sir Muir Gray highlights a growing recognition that improving health cannot rely on healthcare systems alone. Communities, safe environments and social connection all play a vital role in helping people live longer, healthier lives.

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective tools we have to improve physical health, mental wellbeing and reduce isolation. But walking is even more powerful when it happens in safe spaces, clean air and as part of a community.

Sir Muir also highlights the important work of organisations such as Living Streets, which continue to champion walkable communities and tackle barriers to walking, including pavement parking.

As part of the campaign, we’re also pleased to support one of our aligned organisations, World Walking, whose app has helped more than 253,000 people log 78.5 million miles through virtual walking challenges that motivate movement and connection 💡

For International Nurses Day, we’re recognising and celebrating the vital role nurses play in supporting prevention, behaviour change and person-centred care across every stage of healthcare 👏

Nurses are often the clinicians most likely to make lifestyle assessments in consultations, yet many report a lack of training and confidence in delivering lifestyle advice and supporting behaviour change.

BSLM supports nurses through clinically relevant Lifestyle Medicine education, including CPD-accredited webinars, events, nursing factsheets, articles, research and practical resources designed to support both patients and healthcare professionals 💡

Registered nurses can receive 50% off first-year BSLM membership using code NURSE50.

Explore the Lifestyle Medicine for Nurses pathway here: https://bslm.org.uk/lifestyle-medicine-for-nurses/

Today is also a chance to acknowledge and thank nurses for their everyday contribution to patients, communities and the wider healthcare system 💙 Tag a nurse who deserves to be celebrated.
