As part of our mission to explain the many job roles in Occupational Health, we are working with the National School of Occupational Health, to lift the lid on the different career pathways available. Here, OH Nurse, Ann-Marie, explains her career journey.

"How My Journey Began

My journey to occupational health (OH) began in 2021. My skin condition had flared up to the point where it became difficult to work safely and effectively as a nurse in a clinical setting with patients. I became a patient, under the care of Dr Shriti Pattani (Society of Occupational Medicine (SOM) Immediate Past President) and an amazing team of nurses.

"It was a period where, although I felt discouraged about my nursing journey, I witnessed how OH advocated for me and supported me through a challenging time.

"I have gained a deep appreciation and understanding of what people in need of such services are experiencing, as well as a respect and admiration for OH professionals.

"OH makes a tangible difference to work and health. If you are looking for a career in OH, whether as a nurse or AHP, have a look and consider a mentor to guide and support your decision"

Regular Nurses.co.uk contributor, Laura Pueyo, has just published a list of urgent challenges facing the NHS and, in fact, the wider UK health and social care sector - not least of which is the ongoing severe shortage of staff. (Link in comments.)

That last point has massively disrupted the recruitment industry in healthcare since Covid. I’ve now lost count of the number of staffing agencies that have disappeared (and with them 100s of recruitment jobs).

The NHS (and private health and care organisations - hospitals, care homes etc) have taken the following measures:

1. edicts from board level to limit agency spend
2. capping the £hourly rate paid to clinical / care professionals
3. hiring heavily from overseas (ramped up non-EU national skill importing since Brexit)

However, not enough has been done to increase student nurses graduating or plugging the churn at the other end as skilled personnel leave to retire early, seek less stressful careers or move overseas for better pay.

Keir Starmer announced the end of NHS England last week. I’m fascinated to see if this will lead to the NHS seeking support from other channels (us!) who have spent a decade promoting careers in healthcare.

Cash is tight everywhere (especially now given the demands on our defence budgets too), but the hard-pressed and under-resourced TA teams in NHS Trusts need more backing so that they can properly fund creative and simple efforts to reach more people (people beyond the NHS' own jobs board).

Also, perhaps, is it time for the NHS to take a lead from the private sector and centralise its TA and recruitment marketing strategies and functions rather than (mostly) devolving them as a Trust-level exercise?

Regular Nurses.co.uk contributor and Band 7 nurse, Laura Pueyo, sets out her predictions for how tech and AI will shape and help healthcare and the NHS in 2025. Go to our site for the full article, but here’s Laura’s summary…

“In 2025, tech is going to help to transform how you work as a healthcare worker. AI will help you keep patients safe, wearables will let you monitor them in real-time, and telemedicine will make care more accessible. Better communication tools and digital learning platforms will support you in providing high quality care. All of this will create a healthcare system that is faster, safer, and more compassionate for both patients and health care workers.”

Top of the list is AI, which will, she says, “play a huge part in keeping patients safe. These smart systems will help you spot health risks earlier by analysing patient data in real-time, leading to fewer mistakes.”

We've teamed up with NHSE Workforce to help explain and promote everything about careers in Occupational Health.

OH practitioners support an employer to provide good work and the employee to remain healthy and supported at work.

Janet O'Neill (who has shared her story in OH with us) feels not enough is known about this hugely varied area of healthcare. For Janet, it's not just been a very welcome career pathway step from her background as a school nurse, but a chance to develop, study, and continue to learn.

OH clinicians consider how work affects health and health affects work, therefore, focusing on the health of the working population.

Job opportunities are EXTREMELY varied and surface in both the private and the public sectors.

The trouble is, the OH workforce is ageing while the need for OH clinicians is growing - so, it's an area that needs new talent and energy. Could that be you?

There's never been a better time to understand and consider this hugely diverse area of care and we're so keen to help Janet and others who are working hard to spread the word in all things OH.

We've teamed up with NHSE Workforce and Training to provide a really great deep dive (FULL information!) resource into everything you ever need to know about careers in Occupational Health!

There's a page to kick you off on your occupational health careers knowledge journey on Nurses.co.uk, plus blogs on our site and links to loads of other resources and videos and podcasts.

In our latest article on Nurses.co.uk, Niall shares his story of how he became a Nursing Assistant at HC-One’s Capwell Grange Care Home in Luton, and how they supported his training to become a registered nurse.

Before starting his career in the social care sector Niall studied Maths and Physics at university. However, after Niall’s grandad became very ill, Niall took time out of university to help look after him, showing his compassionate nature.

Niall developed a profound respect for the hospice workers that cared for his grandad. After his grandad passed away, Niall was drawn back to the experiences he had when visiting and caring for his grandad. Niall had learned a lot through his grandad and wanted to be able to apply what he had learnt to help others and made the decision to embark on a career in care.

He wants to inspire others and encourage more young people and men to complete an apprenticeship and work in the Social Care sector.

When healthcare workers are mentally drained it impacts our ability to provide the care patients deserve. NHS Band 7 nurse, Laura Pueyo, shares 4 things that need to change to fix this.

1. Fostering a supportive culture

2. Access to mental health resources

3. Fighting burnout

4. Promoting physical health

In the world of healthcare the mental well-being of staff often takes a second seat to patient care. There have been small improvements in staff perceptions of health and well-being, but the reality remains troubling. Burnout, stress, and physical ailments like musculoskeletal issues continue to extend among healthcare workers, particularly nurses. These challenges not only affect the well-being of staff but also impact productivity, morale, and of course patient care.

The Complete Guide To Answering Nursing Interview Questions in 2025

How to Approach Interviews - Newly Qualified Nurses

• Emphasize Transferable Skills: Focus on your clinical placement experiences and how they have helped you develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, time management, and patient care. Always try to give examples from your own practice.

• Demonstrate Passion for Nursing: Employers want to see your enthusiasm for patient care and your commitment to professional development.

• Prepare for Clinical Scenarios: You may be asked to respond to hypothetical clinical situations. Practice how you'd approach common nursing challenges, using your placement experience as a guide.

Experienced Nurses

• Leadership and Mentorship: Highlight instances where you’ve led teams, mentored junior staff, or contributed to the development of a care team.

• Decision Making and Problem Solving: Provide examples of situations where you made difficult clinical decisions, especially in high-pressure environments.

• Continuous Professional Development: Employers expect experienced nurses to actively engage in learning. Be prepared to discuss your professional development and how you stay current with best practices.

These examples illustrate your experience in leading under pressure, mentoring colleagues, and making complex clinical decisions in challenging situations. They reflect a deep commitment to patient care, teamwork, and leadership. When answering similar questions in an interview, it's very important to:

• Provide clear, structured examples that demonstrate your role and actions.

• Focus on outcomes, showing how your leadership or decisions positively impacted the patient and team.

• Highlight your ability to balance multiple priorities, communicate effectively with families, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best care possible.

I had absolutely no clinical background whatsoever when Diaverum hired me. I'm not a nurse. I haven't got an NMC number. That was completely different to the norm when I joined Diaverum. They provided me with all the training that I needed. They gave me a really strong clinical deputy who could support my learning needs. They brought in people from other functions who could support my role. They believed in me and backed me. Here’s my story and why I’ll work for them until I retire.
