9th October is a special day to raise awareness about the relaxing and transformative effects of singing bowls and sound therapy. As singing bowls are the main instruments that I work with as part of my sound therapy work, and the instruments from which I am creating a lot of healing and meditation music, I had to post about it!
During my Ph.D. research (which I completed in 2019), I explored my music-making in relation to my shamanic journeying practice; a process I have termed ‘Spiritual Musicking’ (an expansion of Christopher Small’s theory of ‘Musicking’).
Since time immemorial, shaman have used overtone-emitting instruments to change states of consciousness in order to undertake shamanic journeying in non-ordinary reality; whether through the use of the buffalo/frame drum, the didgeridoo, rattles/shakers, the human voice, or singing bowls, bells and gongs, the powerful sound of overtones is the key vehicle (‘sonic driver’) that facilitates the change in consciousness, from an ordinary state of consciousness(OSC) to a shamanic state of consciousness (SSC).
Since completing my Ph.D., I have immersed myself wholeheartedly in the world of Himalayan singing bowls, applying my research knowledge and my many years experience as a free improviser and composer, to run sound bath events that are both musical and grounded in substantial scholarship. I have been recording and releasing improvised singing bowl compositions since May 2024, and these are now being streamed by tens of thousands of listeners all around the world. Thank you to everyone who has been listening, to everyone who is listening now, and thank you in advance to those yet to discover my singing bowl music.
The music in my post on my Nicholas Peters Music page is ‘Contemplating Dhyana’, which features the sound of two Dolpo Tantrik (Ta***ic) singing bowls and a Thadobati Cup bowl. This track was played on BBC Radio 3 Unwind’s “The Sleeping Forecast” in March 2025.
