❄️ Cold toes season and chilblains! ❄️

If your toes get red, itchy, swollen or burning in the winter, you might be dealing with chilblains — super common when the weather turns cold and damp.

🦶 What are chilblains?

They happen when your feet get cold and then warm up too quickly. The tiny blood vessels don’t like the sudden change and cause soreness, itching and swelling.

🩹 How to treat them

• Keep your feet warm and dry
• Avoid warming up too quickly (no radiators or hot water!)
• Don’t scratch — it only makes things worse
• Use a soothing moisturiser or calamine-style lotion
• If the skin breaks, keep it clean and covered
• And if you have diabetes or poor circulation, get professional advice

🧣 How to prevent them

• Wear warm socks and well-fitting shoes
• Avoid tight footwear that restricts circulation
• Warm up gently after being outside
• Stay active to keep blood flowing
• Change out of damp socks or shoes straight away

Your feet work hard for you all winter — give them a little extra love! 💚
If you’re ever unsure whether something is a chilblain or something else, I’m always happy to help.

Why Regular Foot Care Matters for Older Adults 👣
As we get older, our feet go through natural changes — skin becomes thinner, nails become harder to manage, and small issues can turn into bigger problems if left untreated.

Regular foot care helps to:
✨ Prevent painful corns, calluses & thickened nails
✨ Improve comfort and mobility
✨ Reduce the risk of infections
✨ Spot early signs of circulation or diabetic problems
✨ Keep you active, independent & confident on your feet

Looking after your feet means looking after your overall wellbeing. Healthy feet help you stay moving, social and doing the things you love. 💙

If you or a loved one could benefit from professional foot care, I’m here to help.

I recently attended a diabetic foot screening workshop with Duet Diabetes.

Why CPD Matters in Foot Health:

As a Foot Health Practitioner, keeping my skills up to date is essential. CPD helps me stay current with best practice, improve client safety, recognise foot problems early, and provide the highest standard of care.
Ongoing learning means better treatment, better outcomes, and healthier, happier feet. 🦶💚

I will also be attending further courses throughout 2026. 👩‍🎓👣

✨ Why People With Health Conditions Must Prioritise Foot Care ✨

If you’re living with diabetes, heart disease or peripheral artery disease (PAD), looking after your feet isn’t just important — it’s essential.
These conditions can affect circulation, nerve function and healing, making your feet more vulnerable to problems that may go unnoticed.

👣 Why foot care matters 👣

🦶Reduced sensation can mean cuts, blisters or infections go unnoticed.
🦶Poor circulation makes it harder for wounds to heal.
🦶Infections can worsen quickly, leading to serious complications if not treated early.
🦶Regular checks help prevent small issues from becoming major concerns.

💚Simple steps to protect your feet💚

• Check your feet daily for changes
• Keep skin clean and moisturised
• Wear properly fitting footwear
• Seek professional foot care regularly
• Don’t ignore any pain, colour change or swelling

Healthy feet help you stay active, independent and confident — no matter your health condition.

If you need support looking after your feet, I’m here to help.

Do Genetics Play a Role?

These sisters show a clear difference in foot function. One has worn shoes for years; the other has never worn shoes.

Could shoes be the culprit behind the older sister’s foot issues? Or is it genetics?

Our study, “The Shoe Effect,” revealed many stories like this. Participants often noticed changes in foot health linked to their footwear habits.

Want to improve your foot function? Start by rethinking your daily shoes and adding some foot exercises. With patience, healthier feet are possible!

Check out our “Fix Your Feet” workshop, an excellent way to begin improving your foot health and function.

Share this with someone who needs to see it—especially if they doubt shoes make a difference!

📅 Reflecting on “The Shoe Effect” from Nov 2023, we ask: Are bunions genetic or caused by our shoes?

Do you suffer with bunions?
